want to get some thoughts here on the possibilty of using a ribbon seg for single vision wearers, who need some help on the crt screen, thus you would have more leeway on where you could place the seg

Ribbon segs will save the day in many occupational applications due to the flexibility of segment placement, they ain't just for prism control. I've even used them vertically on a few occasions. Actually, wearing my FT trifocals at the computer the intermediate simulates an R seg. Give it a try. Just be prepared to lose a progressive lens wearer because wide is good.

The B&S automatic screw machine and many other machine tools have operators panels to the left or right periphery of the operators field of vision perhaps as close as 12 inches. Many +1.00 to +1.75 presbyopes can see at the 30 to 40 inch work distance just fine with their distance correction and have no need for near straight ahead from floor to ceiling. Have also used ribbon segs upside down for presbyopic steel workers who can not wear any near correction in the lower portion of their lenses.

In an occupational application not everyone needs clear near vision in the lower portion of the lens and in the case of the worker who has a stationary stance the seg should go where the close work is.

Remember, we are talking about occupational eye wear and are not trying to provide a pair of glasses that fits all situations.
