Do I fill this Rx or Not??

I had a customer come in with a contact Lens Rx from an opthamology office yesterday to order his contacts. When I reviewed the Rx everything looked fine except it was signed by the optician instead of the doc. Is that legal to fill? The optician had stamped his own name and signed where the MD usually signs, then put "for" and the docs initials underneath. I've never seen this before and was just wondering about validity of rx without the doctors signature.

Phone the doctor to confirm it.

In most states the signature would be valid (The employer is responsible for the acts of his employees). I have known Opthalmologists who haven't signed anything personally in 20 years. Some even use a rubber stamp.
The real question is: Do you have the doctor's authorization and will he stand behind you should anything go wrong? Will he tell the board of optometry : Yes I designated him to dispense (Fit?) contacts on this patient.
If the answer is no to any of these three questions don't involve yourself with any patient for this doctor.
Even telephone authorization is fine, if the doctor stands behind you.

Yeah, I can hear the disagreements coming already.

Thank you for your quick replys. I will verify with the MD over the phone, this was just my first time in this situation and I was a little uneasy with what was/wasn't legit. :p Glad to hear it probably is common practice with some MDs.

be careful, keep the antennae up for "secret shoppers" that may be hired by the board to see if you will fall for the bait. I stay skeptical, but that's a big reason we have a thriving business.

I would fill it, as long as it looked legit. As in, it wasn't Dr. Ballbreaker at #123 Blind Alley.

It also might be a copy of the Rx. I've seen this in cases where the Doc would sign the original, then if the patient wanted a second copy, it'd be signed 'for' them by their staff. I've worked in two OD offices, they both just use signature stamps. *shrug*
