I like Visual Lab Pro, great for a small lab, simple to use and adding lenses to the database is very straight forward.
1st* HTML5 Tracer Software
1st Mac Compatible Tracer Software
1st Linux Compatible Tracer Software
*Dave at OptiVision has a web based tracer integration package that's awesome.
For a small lab processing 5 to 100 jobs per day consider Optifacts O2. It is very affordable and offers significant advantages over traditional lab software. Calcs are excellent. Best part is we take care of all the lens data maintenance, program updates, etc. It comes with all the computer hardware and we include an onsite install and training. Visit www.optifacts.com for info as well as several user testimonies.
We use an antique program called Surfax. Got it when we first got our PC XT, running DOS 6.21 on a 5 1/2" floppy, which is what it's written for. However it works fine with XP.
It has no database, but you just enter the pertinent data. It's main quirk is that it figures cutout diameter a bit large, but interestingly, the plus powers don't turn out too thick to go with the larger cutout. And rarely an OU RX gets different tools, so we go with the steeper set.

Those old programs that use A,B and ED to calc thickness will give you lots of thickness problems.
True, but you learn. The only real thing we have to do concerns 10 base lenses - it figures them exactly 10 points thick.
I just found another limitation last week. When entering in mono pd, anything over 40mm gets taken as a binocular pd. Only twice can I ever remember going over that limit. This guy had a head the size of a bowling ball and fish eyes on each side of his head. Monos were 41.5 OD and 40 OS. Yikes!

Hi G,
The answer depends on your requirements and your future plans for your lab. Each lab is different and can cost justify different software solutions. Larger labs have more requirements, need more efficiencies and require more sophisticated systems. Consider using Innovations calculations and machine interface software www.ocuco.us or upgrading to a complete Labzilla's complete lab management system www.opticalonline.com
