Is the only name that clearly says what you are doing. Fancy names get lost in the minds of consumers. They will not know the product and therefore will not go to your store.

Keep it simple. Eventually, everyone forgets the name.

As its your home town you might want to include your name in the name of your shop. Something like Emil Katow, Optics - unless of course your name has a negative connotation in the area and you or family members are under indictment.

Not that you want to plan your exit strategy before you open but consider this. When its time to sell, the business may be more attractive with a commercial name like Malaysia Eyes than a persons name who is no longer there.

Actually you do want to plan your exit strategy. I always use names that I can easily sell, and that don't take a genius to figure out what you do.

I like Chris' idea. I think it says everything, plus it's a name you can grow into.

In Malaysia, I think words look different. None of the names offered up sound appealing to me. But on the other hand I don't live in that area of the world. I assume, perhaps not, that the names and/or ideas of names were transferred into English where much is lost in translation. For instance if I suggested Optique Boutique, how would that transfer into Malaysian?

    KK616:

The DelVeccio brothers own Luxottica and everything else in the optical business that you and I don't own. They have gobbled up most of the wholesale business and are rapidly gobbling up the optical retail and a large part of the optical insurance business. The name alone would make them want to buy it, if successfull for profit. If not successfull to eliminate it operating under thier name.

I don't like any of the first choices.
It may be different in Malaysia, but "Ottico Lineament" is too long and difficult. Consider this.

    1. Keep it short verbally. Two or three syllables are best. Think Starbucks. The Gap. Pizza Hut. Short and easy to remember.

    2. Name for the ear, not the eye. People TELL their friends about stores more than they write about them. Regular words used out of context are best. Alliteration never hurts. Think Google. Blockbuster. Monster.

    3. Unique but not clever. Forget about the endless puns that can be associated with vision. Use a word that is not currently being used by your competition. Pizza Hut was already taken, so what did Tom Monaghan call his pizza place? Pizza Shack? No. He used a unique name. Domino's.

    4. Meaningful. Choose a name that really means something and helps people to remember what you stand for. If you're going to specialize in eyewear that suits different professions, don't call it Speedy Optical.

    I hope this helps.

Oh, and unless your name is Robert Redford or Giorgio Armani, keep your name off the sign.

There are some who choose a store name specifically for better telephone 'Yellow Pages' positioning... and therefor have 'a' as a name-starting letter.

A-1, AA, Able, etc... something that will be positioned at or near the front of the Yellowpage category.

    your name

I opened up "Eye Candy Optical Boutique" Jan2007 :p
    My logo says EYE CANDY
My name is Candy- and when people look at my card or actually "get it!"
they think it is the coolest thing ever.
I have people who don't know me come up t me and say I love the name of your store by the way...

So if you can use your name, or something catchy that they will remember you will be the first place they think of when they think eyeglasses.

maylasian a spectacle of myself!! hee hee:D
