Large Placido Cone vs Small Cone Topographer

I'm in charge of shopping for a new topographer. I'm not sure about the pro's and cons of a small placido disc vs a large disc. I would like any insight of experience you may of had. We are getting ready to retire our 12 year old Keratron that has the "small" cone.

Just measure the eye if possible with keratometer an dig out the cone trial set. Results will be the same or better and save you trouble of fireing up the gadget. Have found that any other method on cones except extreemly early ones is useless.

Thanks for the suggestion, Chip. I understand, but perhaps my question was not clear enough.

I am tyrying to evaluate topographers. The Keratron that we now have, uses a "small cone" ( placido disc ) to make the image rings. Sometimes we cannot get close enough to a patient with deep set eyes. Some large cones have a longer focal length so getting close enogh is not an issue, but then you may get shadows from the brow or nose. I was hoping someone would have experince to confirm or deny the pros and cons of different size cones/discs.

    Corneal Topographer

I have used the Medmont E-300 topographer for the past 4 years. It has a small cone (32 rings). I fit RGP, soft, as well as Ortho-K and in my opinion this is the best, most user friendly, and accurate machine available on the market today.
I have quite a bit of experience with other machines so my choice is an educated one.

    Topographer

We use a combination unit that does Auto Refraction and Topgoraphy from Tomey. The neat thing about ours is that if a patient has deep set eyes you can push a button that makes the cone retract slightly. This limits the rings to about 7 or 8 mm of the cornea compared to 11 mm. Unit can be hooked up to a computer directly or through a network if you want to send the information to a Electronic Medical Record. We have had ours for about three years with no problems, newer ones are even more automatic. I am not sure the model number (typing this at home). Hope this helps.

Thanks to all for your input.

We have made our decision. We have stayed with the Scout, due to cost and backward compatibility.

    I consider my questions answered.

    Thanks
