    average cost of AR eyewear

    Hi everyone,

    I don't know much about retail side of the industry and I'd like to know what the difference between plain SV AR coated lenses and premium AR coated lenses from the major manufacturers are. Assuming a small optician that edges his own lenses, percentage wise, does the customer pay proportionately much more for a premium lens compared to the average lens? To be specific;

    How much is the cost of the average pair of plain SV AR lenses to the optician?
    How much does the average optician charge for an plain pair of edged SV AR to the customer?
    How much is a pair of premium SV AR uncuts from a large lab?
    How much does the average optician charge for a premium pair of edged SV AR to the customer?

    I'm not asking for anybody's private business. I'm just trying to understand the average markups in the industry, not specific markups. Thanks in advance for any replies.

    You won't get wholesale pricing in this forum. Join the Professionals only forum for as little as $5 per month. You'll get your answers there.

    Prices vary by a great deal from one market to the next. What a dispenser can charge in no where Pennsylvania as opposed to say, San Francisco is a huge difference. If you buy your lenses from a company like Nassau instead of an Essilor lab you are looking at say <wholesale prices removed> a pair (Nassau) to <wholesale prices removed> from the lab. If you do in house edging,use a lens company directly for the lower price but charge the same retail. We charge <wholesale prices removed> for house AR and <wholesale prices removed> Alize. You can get premium coated lenses from ODG at a great price too. (Optical Distributor Group at (888) 305-3300) Shop around other stores in your area to see what the market will bear for retail. Some places get <wholesale prices removed> for Alize here,we just don't gouge our patients.

    Thanks, Caree

    From what I can gather the cost difference between low to high to the optician is <wholesale prices removed>. Since the average retail markup is usually 2x cost, the average optician with edging capabilities charges <wholesale prices removed> per pair more for a premium AR lens compared to an average SV AR. Does that sound about right?

    Sorry everybody,

    I'm not trying to learn anybody's business. I was just wondering what the average differences were, nothing specific to markets or suppliers or customers or even to brands. Sorry for any misunderstandings.
