New Optician School in Ottawa ?!?!?!?

So apparently Hakim and Laurier optical has put together a 2 Year optician training course in Ottawa that takes place every Sunday.

What makes it fascinating is the teacher is actually from Seneca in Toronto!

From what I gather this school isn't even recognized 'YET' by the Ontario Board of Opticians.... but I'm sure once some kickback/under-the-table $$$$ is given to the board.. that'll change.

Hum... so are these potential opticians are to work just for Hakim and Laurier at a lower wage??

Has anyone else heard about this??

Well if this a new Seneca College-sanctioned course then there is really no problem, right?

Of course 'Landlord' must now be shaking in his boots
... more job competition to take away his precious employment and rip the food from his babies's mouths, and this time from Ottawa-based Ontarions.
Life is SOOO UNFAIRRR!!:hammer: Time to buy private unemployment Insurance.

    LOL:D

Just to give you guys and update, apparently Tony (Laurier's Owner) and Mr. Hakim did manage to pay the Ontario's boards off to allow their current enrollment of 32 students (80% Laurier and 20% Hakim employee) to write the NACO exam in two years (end of their program).

What's interesting is this SCHOOL is still accepting enrollments ....
Which means its definitely bound to proceed in years to come.... so are the future students allowed to write the NACO exam?!?!? Heck who knows.. maybe they'll just keep paying Mr. Fernandes and Ms. Mietkiewicz @ Ontario's board off....

As for the teacher from Seneca .. I sure hope it ain't Tim Schmidt, cause his wife @ Georgian isn't gonna be too happy... j/k :D

I"ll keep you guys posted once I find more info

    Congee,

I have enough to do already without teaching in Ottawa, but thanks for your concern regarding my marital status. Also, just so you have the facts, I haven't taught at Seneca for almost 2 years now so it wouldn't be fair or true to claim I'm still a teacher there.

If you have any other questions regarding my professional or personal life, call me. I'm easy enough to reach.

    Tim

Hey Tim, sorry if I offended you or anything, no hard feelings
I know you're easy to reach, still @ transitions?
Its just your qualifications and skills is the only teacher that I could imagine them hiring, anyone else would be subpar.

On another note, welcome to Optibard ;)

    Congee,

    No offense taken.

My only suggestion is that if you're going to drop names, and/or make accusations, make absolutely certain you have all the facts.

Is there verifiable proof to your claims of kick backs or pay-offs that you can actually share with the rest of us? I love a great conspiracy theory as much as anyone but we still live in a society where innocence is presumed until proven guilty.

That said, it's also great that we live in a society where one has the freedom to express one's opinion but I wasn't aware this was a forum in which we are supposed to verbally beat the crap out of each other under assumed identities.

I was taught a long time ago, that if you're going to find fault with something, instead of pointing a finger, take an active role in providing a realistic solution....in other words, if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.

So, if you don't like what's happening these days in our profession, where would you begin to make positive changes? I hear a lot of shouting these days but not a lot of dialogue.

Believe it or not, we're all in this together.

    Tim

    Question On the program topic

I have heard that Laurier has sponsored Seneca to bring the program to Ottawa(no idea if its true or not maybe they just helped seneca bring it to ottawa). If the program is honoured at Seneca in Toronto and is being taught the same would they really need to have it approved by the board? I think its great to have a program there, they are really thriving for opticians! I would like to believe that the College of Opticians would avoid any conflict of interest as far as Tony or whomever paying them off.
Maybe im being naive to the situation. I like to stay positive though.

    Did some homework....

    Fact:
If you dig a little you'll discover that the COO has not accepted the Ottawa students nor have they been registered.

    Fact:
The MTCU (Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities) has yet to confirm acceptance or rejection of the Ottawa program. Until they receive a response, the COO won't accept or register those students. If, however the MTCU (Ontario Gov't) accepts the program, the COO won't have many choices and will likely be obliged to comply.

It would seem any bribes would need to be paid to local MPP's but hey, what's one more political scandal in Ottawa anyway?:drop:

I too welcome you to Optiboard, Tim.

If this is a new official Seneca College opticianry program, based in Ottawa, what could be the problem? They will ultimately earn a Seneca credential and I assume then sit the NACOR National exam(s). Why would COO object to that?

Thats what I think too...if it is a diploma through Seneca then whats the difference between that and going to school in Toronto? Is it the same amount of time in class? Or is it ran differently?
