    Question for optoms/owners

Similar to VSP thread but this one's about DAVIS vision.
Has anyone had Davis for a number of years and then dropped it? Or would Optoms not be able to survive without it? Any success stories?

If we dropped it at my office the Optical wouldn't suffer (if 1 out of 10 davis pt's pay out of pocket, we'd be ahead of the game) but the impression is that the OD would lose patients.

Anyone come up with a creative way to retain/recruit pt's to make up for this? Thanks for the input.

    :)

Sorry, I didn't make halfway through the credentialing packet before I pitched it in the trash.

Sounds like I made the right move...

Back in MA, the last office I worked for took Davis. As other offices in our area dropped Davis because of the poor dispensing fees and bad lab service, the percentage of Davis patients rose. When it rose over 10%, I lobbied hard for the office to drop Davis because I knew we were losing money on every Davis patient who got glasses from us.

The docs looked at the numbers, agreed with me, gritted their teeth and dropped it. They lost a few patients, but not that many, and they never regretted their decision.

If you can afford to drop Davis now and not have it hurt your practice, my suggestion is, do it.

we are in the hart of Davis country since the purchase by Highmark, if there wasn't a mountain between us we could see the Highmark headquarters from our office. Point is we were about 25% highmark in '05 started seeing a handfull of pts having Davis and going elsewhere, '06-07 highmark plans start switching to davis plans losing pt's likes rats deserting a sinking ship lost 15% Pt's . Started taking davis pt's came back "we always liked you guys but our plan wouldn't let us come here" and are back to 25% Davis. I wouldn't take it if there was a choice couldn't aford to lose a quarter of our patients.

I posted a reply because you asked if any optoms/owner's office's had suffered because they don't take this program.

I looked into it, read the marterial, and decided it wasn't for us. We have not suffered because of it. The credentialing packet spells out why you won't suffer without it -because it's not a profit generator.

Also, much of my decision not to take was based on numerous other threads on the DAVIS topic. I'm sure you've read those as well, so I'm not telling you anything new.

I'll stop posting to this thread to leave room for all the success stories sure to follow.
    ;)

You also asked if Optoms could do without it. He was telling you he could do without it.

BTW, we do without it here too. It's probably the only insurance we don't take.

I'm asking for success stories from anyone who has had Davis and THEN dropped them. i.e. Did pt's drop off, how did you make up for it, etc.
It was a simple question really. :)

Last placed I worked at we took Davis, and finally dropped them. I find it is only profitable if they buy a 2nd pair, or purchase a frame not provided by Davis. However, i do want to note for the whole month, we had maybe 4 davis patients, so it was not a large prt of our business. I found it a hassel more than anything. If something went wrong, the patients would yell or argue until we could finally get them to calm down and relize we did not make the frame nor lenses.

If I remember correctly their lab was in Baltimore, or am I confusing that with Spectera, which we dropped as well.

I would also say that less than 30% of our business was Insurance, and being near Mexico, about half of our sales were Plano Sun from Mexicans coming up to shop on the weekend. They would whip out a rolled up wad of 100's and count them out. God I miss those days! LOL
