    Anyone ever noticed?

It seems that only retail stores with a ton of high dollar designer frames go out of business and need to "dump" them at "great prices".
I've had eleven locations over the years and never even returned frames much less closed and had a fire sale.
Maybe these people should try having a broader market selection in the inventory, open with less expense till they get it going.
People don't flock to your door just because you have a lot of high dollar "stuff".
Sometimes I wonder about the business brain of some opticians, oops did I say that?:hammer:

    Uncle Bill,

Great observation! I've noticed the same thing in the marketplace forum. It might not be safe to assume that these are all bad business decisions, but on the other hand, you don't see a lot of discount guys going under. (Unless that maybe when the discounters go under, nobody notices, and what they are liquidating isn't worth mentioning.)

The broader market concept does make sense.

And as far as opticians' brains...at least now, you're admitting that we have them! Thanks!

It just occured to me that you may have been refering to a different market than I was.

Up here, we refer to our female customers as "women" and "ladies". And yes, that is a good market to go after.

Women purchase over 70% in my business. Down here we call them "honey" and "darlin", just kiddin, we say mam.
You a sharp kid to notice, no wonder you do so well.:)

I think that statement is the truth. Discounters go under all the time. In fact a read a study that found only one low-price leader company across dozens of industries that was successful long-term. Chevrolet was the company. And the authors admitted that Chevrolet was a little different bacause they made decent quality products, unlike most other low-price leaders.

The problem w/ low-end is that you are catering to people who don't want to pay in the first place. They are looking to get something for nothing. And then when you offer the low quality stuff that they paid for, they are upset at the quality.

If I had to pick low-end or high-end. I would pick high-end. But only 20% of the market is high-end. You are right; there are too many businesses catering to that relatively small demographic.

I guess that is why we picked the mid-range market.

I think the people getting rid of the brand names either have something to hide, or are jsut more technical advance (why they use OB). Plus, if they say they have 50 frames from a company you have never heard of, you may be less inclined to look at them.

In reality, five stores have closed in my region in the past three years. Three low end independents, on OD who was getting out of dispensing, and one low end chain. The OD is the only one who chose to get out.

So there is your counter example.

....LOW END. Somehow when you go from HIGH END to somewhere in the middle people want to call you low end.
If you have a few pieces of high end a few low end and a lot of in between, bingo can't miss. People want a choice yet most will spend what they have to get what they want.COVER ALL THE BASES LEAVE NO ONE OUT AND YOUR MARKET BECOMES BIGGER. REMEMBER EVERYONE WHO COMES IN YOUR DOOR IS LOOKING TO PURCHASE AND IF YOU LOSE THEM IT IS YOUR FAULT.
It is just as much a mistake to go "low end" as "high end", why go both ends and the middle?

No, these guys were low end. Not mid end.

I was mid to high end (high end for the region, mid end for big cities).
