    Poly versus Glass

Oh, this topic may appear to be about optics, but it isn't.

A couple of years ago on a tv special they were talking about how they create the doors to the White House. These doors are bullet proof, so they insert a glass piece that is a couple inches thick in between the wood. This creates a very heavy door. I was wondering why they did not use poly. I assume they could make it a lot thinner, and lighter.

If anyone would know, it would be you Optical Madmen (and women).

I don't have an answer to your question, but I do know who is in the black SUV outside your office. using bullet and white house in close proximity will get you that. - oh crap

Maybe they wanted to see out of it. Maybe they had elaborate designs that poly distortion would not be compatable with. Maybe Bush had a deal with PPG. Probably the powers that be tested everything and what they used turned out in thier tests.
They also use glass sanwich for bullet proofing vehicle windows.
Shoot, they might have even asked someone smarter than us what to do.

Yes, poly would make it thinner and lighter, but they need the best to view their myopic world through.

Um... wasn't the inference that the glass was BETWEEN the layers of wood on the door, implying it's non-visible? That's what I got out of it anyway. If that's indeed true and it's not visible, then of course the best thing to use would have been Trivex!!:D:D:D

If it was concealed, hardened steel would have been best. Done well this stuff is really impact resistant. Perhaps even tungsten steel.

I just ordered a pair of kevlar polarized lenses. We'll see how they turn out.
