I just saw Amazing Grace last night. It's the story of William Wilburforce who spearheaded the abolishment of slavery in England during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Some liberties were taken in the interest of plot, the essential truths were portrayed and it was an enjoyable lesson in history.Not a bad take at all.

Saw Amazing Grace in the theater. I loved it. It's a beautiful and moving film. Albert Finney was incredible in it too.

Went to see it last night. Was not looking forward to as I thought it would be preaching guns. But it did not. Great commentary on the laziness of privileged and semi-privileged kids today, and how they feel they are entitled to everything, and then the comparison to the Hmong males who either make the choice to join a gang or get killed by it.
I agree...Eastwood movie was great. Brought back memories of John Wayne's last movie, the Shootist.
We saw THE WRESTLER with Mickey Rourke on Thursday night. This was also a great movie....certainly an Oscar worthy performance. I am disappointed the Bruce Springstein song from this movie was not nominated.

Shadrack is about a Southern family that apparently declined in the wake of emancipation, and in several generations become "white trash" during the depression. (no, not this one, the last one.) They still own the original plantation, and eke out a living brewin' moonshine at the badly delapitated plantation. Along comes a very elderly African American who was a slave at the plantation as a young boy, and wants to die there, and be buried with his family on the property.
An excellent movie.
Wanted to add Defiance. Great little story about Jewish Belorussians from World War II who hid in the forest to escape the holocaust.

Funny, when we talked about the book and movie "Rocket Boys" you mentioned you had been a lifeguard around the same time and place.
I actually grew up at the same time in the same neighborhood as Tommy Chong, in East Vancouver.
I didn't know him, but we do have a couple of mutual aquaintences.
I saw an interesting documentary about him on Showtime last week. Seems the Federal Prosecutor gave Tommy the option of pleading guilty or they would also throw his wife and son in the slammer. Also, of all the people arrested in that case, Tommy got by far the most severe penalty. One argument the prosecutor used was in reference to his films being poor examples for children. Imagine that, he got extra time for exercising his First Amendment rights. As if children should be watching those films. Why don't they monitor everybody and arrest the parents for showing a movie like that to their kids.
Oh, wait - that would be totalitarian and now they're out of office.
I also saw a Roast of Cheech And Chong lately. It was rather lame, but it was good to see them together again. Best part was Penn Gillette knocking the top off the bong-shaped podium accidentally.

I saw this a few weeks ago and was blown away by it! I hadn't heard of this before - Fascinating!
I want to see Gran Torino and my hairdresser has recommended Slum Dog Millionaire.
So I thought I'd have a go.
My favorite movie hands down is Bent. This is the only movie I've ever cried watching. It has Ian Mckellen, Clive Owen, Jude Law, and a memorable appearance from Mick Jagger. Link to movie info is:
