Our own Darryl Meister wrote a course for opticampus continueing ed. that may have some of what you're looking for. Perhaps he can give us the link again? I forget what thread it was under.
I found it fascinating and printed it out. The page 11 graphic alone justifies printing it to show bifocal wearers who want to switch to progressives why it will be harder to adjust from bifocals to progressives since they did not start with progessives. Or show it to a patient who's add increased a half diopter or more and wants to know why the peripheral distortion is more noticeable.
If you give this to an engineer who asks how progressives are designed and why are the new ones more expensive let them read this. Just be prepared for the puddle of saliva that will form on the floor beneath the chair as he or she reads it! And don't give it to them close to closing or you will not get out until they finish!!
You are on your own in regard to software optimization. To my knowledge all designs are protected by patents if you are thinking making your own "new" progressive.
Here's my attempt at giving you the web address-
