More ammo re night myopia and acuity standards for driving

Those of you who have read some of my other posts and articles are aware that this subject is a pet areacof mine, and that it points up our inadequate driving acuity thresholds.

The link below provides more interesting ammo:

    http://www.eyeworld.org/article.php?sid=3900

After reading it, ask yourself why so many

    "-0.50 -0.25 x 180 O.U."

Rxs are felt (by the client, and sometimes the doc) not needed by many for night driving...

and compounded by the fact that this threshold of uncorrected focus-acuity easy passes every state's minimum for driving without eyewear!

    Go Figure...???

    Thoughts?

the same reason that people come in with no complaints and achieve a three line improvement in vision.

the same reason people who are 20/40 (or worse) believe they can see "well enough, and I know where I'm going anyway".

the same reason the patient admits not to wearing their glasses for driving even since the doctor had corrective lenses added to their license because the Dr. got tired of asking the pt to wear the glasses while driving.

however since I mostly slept through my psych 101 course I couldn't tell you what that reason is.

    Interesting subject!

Here's a paper that would disagree with the above:

Overall, doesn't look like a well researched area - let me know if you have any ideas, I'm looking for a third year research project!

If you don't prescribe un-needed glasses you don't get as much of a fee from medicaid. Man that's two pair a year. With $2.00 frames you can make a profit of about $75.00 twice a year. That's why such people really need those glasses.

Night myopia is more than the implied low luminance levels. It is related to "empty-field" myopia and "exit-pupil" myopia. When driving, I maintain that the lack of a specific object of *distinction* to fixate upon also contributes to "empty-field" myopia.

Remember, these *night* myopias are considered evolutionary in origin. Out mammilian ancestors who, when awoken at night by the sound of a potential predator, did not have a visual system that was *pre-focussed* for approx 3-4 feet were..well..not around to propogate offspring.

It is innate to our origins.
