    memory frames

So you sell a memory frame, customer sees how you can scrunch them up
and a couple of years they come back with a broken frame!
They want a new one do you give it to them?
Sure the warranty is 1 or 2 years but theyve been shown by us that they are indestructable!

    What do you do?

This particular frame snapped bang in the middle of the highly elastic memory part!

    Alan:cheers:

    Nothing is unbreakable...

Demonstrate the properties of the product, but explain EACH time that there is a limit to the number of times that something can be abused without breaking. People understand and appreciate the honesty. Discuss warranty up front.

NEVER demonstrate the flex properties to a child.

You sell them a new one.

Nothing is indestructable! Somebody who expects you to give them a new frame at NO CHARGE, is a JERK.

    Don't give in to JERKS.

What I tell the parents is that the frame has "forgiveness factor" and I am straight up front with them that it will not hold up to continual flex play. The flex simply offers the chance for better durability.

    That said...

I had a developmentally disabled man bring me his glasses where the flex bridge broke in the middle.. again. I couldn't find any signs of twisting, though he has a history off ALL metal frames breaking in the area. I am thinking he HAS to be pulling out or something when he puts them on, but instead of making a big stink to the family.. I apologized, explained that this was only the second time I had seen that, the first the prior time they were in, but we would rectify the situation by choosing a new PLASTIC frame..

    Ok,

You sell a guy a car.
You explain how fast it goes, but that it also has airbags.
A year later he crashes it.

Do you give him a new one ? :hammer:

Sell new one. The days of "lifetime warranty" are long over.

Memory frames, I explain and demonstrate and say "like anything the more you twist the weaker it gets" don't do it..it is just there if you REALLY need it. After the warranty, of course, they pay for the next one...life is not perfect...

When your frame rep wraps the temples around his/her finger and twists the front like a pretzel they are, essentially, 'showing off'. If you replicate those demonstrations to your patients you are asking for trouble. Half the people I sell memory's to I don't even mention the feature. If I do demonstrate, I basically rotate the front back and forth just enough to show that it will come back.
Also, if it's 2 years later it's a no-brainer. Let's see Mr Smith, your Rx expires in 2 years - do you really think the frame warranty extends past that? And...if your office has a policy for warranties, explain to them that it IS warranted, but the warranty period has passed. Of course there is always gonna be those that think that shouldn't matter.
If it was always easy, anyone could do what we do and it would be much less interesting. After all, when was the last time you got home and told your spouse about the nicely fitting eyewear you dispensed to a really nice person that saw as they expected - BORING!! :bbg:

Actually, some days I do -- it's satisfying for me to do something that actually helps someone see better. :D

It takes a lot for those frames to break.

As long as we mention that they still need care and do not need to be abused they will last a lifetime.

I'll never forget the day that a co-worker was demonstrating how flexible an auotflex 1 was. It snapped in half at the bridge! I still tease him about it!

I had that happen with an EasyTwist. Very Embarrassing.

    Sell them a new one

Even if it's inside the warranty period, I explain to patients the manufacturers warranty against defects. If it is not defective, and 5 months old, I still sell them a new one. Never give up, never give in. (Unless its your parents, who will never leave you alone, lol)

I have never really liked memory frames. They seem to get "off" easily. I have seen several snap, also. I like to be able to adjust the bridge and I can't with these.

Erm, I bought a pair of memoflex and it snapped at the bridge... I didn't think the frames or the bridge WERE made of memo flex stuff, just the bits that go round your ears?

Forgive me if I sound daft, I dun make spectacle thingies, just other lenses.

Is the bridge part really the same material?
