Random Optical things I want to know:

On the abo-ac, there was a question about pregnant edger wheels or something like that...I have no clue what this is. Does anyone know or can point me toward a site or something to clue me in?

Another is using the prism compensator. Either I'm just not seeing it or it's not there, but exactly how to use it on the lensometer.

    thanks.

    Nicole

I've never heard of a pregnant edger wheel!

The prism compensator dial is on some lensometers such as the Marco 101. it has a dial at the eyepiece that you can turn to bring the prism into the reticle center. I believe Harry Chiling wrote an article for Opticourier that details it more.

You could be talking about an impregnated edger wheel, which means that the diamonds are not on the outside of the wheel, but rather inside. These wheels were used for glass lenses because if you had diamonds on the outside they would come off. Glass generator wheels and hand stones were like this also.

Not all Marco 101 models have prism compensation rings, if they do they will have the dial in the pic below.

See I took the pregnant wheel thing a little too far. When I first read about this I thought "Great how am I gonna get this thing pregnant?" So I turned off all the lights in the lab put on some slow music, sweet talked it a little then got down to biznis! Patients all surrounding the lab windows wanting to get a look at the legend in action. Lets just say those little diamonds can cause some damage and I learned my lesson! YOU CANNOT GET AN EDGER WHEEL PREGNANT:finger: No matter how hard you try!! And the shame you feel trying to explain this to the paramedics, I just can't put it into words. I know some of you know what I mean. It's time to get my drink on and forget that night!

I sent you a PM detailing how they work. It works on the same princile as a Risley Prism. In the Marco 101 for example you have 2 x 12.5 Prism Diopter prisms in the compensator, when the bases are alighned the prism power is 25 diopters, whent he bases are on opposite ends the total prism power is 0 diopters and as you could guess anywhere between gives you different powers between 0 to 25 diopters, the whole mechanism rotates on a 180 degree allowing the operator to align the base in which ever direction needed.

Just saw your post.......................I would love to know the secret howe to get an edger wheel pregnant................because I would start an edger farm and sell them to edger manufacturers and cut out the wheel manufacturers in China and Taiwan.

    .................................................................

Once the information is in I will post a thread asking everybody to donate their old wheels and we will get them pregnant to create a new population of baby wheels.

What a nice way to follow the Kyoto accord..............getting them pregnant instead of manufacturing new ones................what you say? ....................drk
