In the old days it used to be Filos SA...................so they made a catchier name = SAFILO

Like SL (Societes des Lunettiers) became ESSEL in the 60s and the ESSILOR later on.

I think Chris has it right.

Its been a long time since I have been in a dispensary. Apparently, by the tone of some of these posts, Safilo is not the same company that it was many years ago when the product was imported by Star Line Overseas.

I am still wearing a Goldman frame that was given to me by Mr. Burger and the frame has given me excellent service for over 37 years. I am still putting glass G-15s lenses in it but I have only one pair of blanks left. If I can’t find another pair after the next RX change I will have to stop going in for refractions every five years or so.

Safilo used to be a great company in all respects. We certainly made a ton of money peddling their products. Ahh . . . well . . . I suppose that like most everything else these days the eye care business seems to be going to hell in a hand basket which I attribute to the growth of stupid among the youts of today.

Question Some of you oldies ask around.

Keep guessing. Each letter means something in Italian. If you know a rep who has been aroung awhile ask them. My time is running short. I am supposed to have the answer on Friday.

OK, folks, here it is. The real acronym, from my old Saflio core rep in MA who's Italian:

    Societa
    Accionala
    Fabrica
    Italiana
    Lovaro
    Occiali

Meaning: "societa accionala" means corporation; "fabrica Italiana" means Italian factory; "lovaro occiali" means manufacturing eyeglasses.

I apologize for spelling errors; he left the message on my cellphone without spelling the words and only said them once, so if any of you folks speak Italian, please correct this.

I have not dealt with Safilo frames in a many years, but I remember them to be one of the best available at the time.

My father was on old truck driver who would only wear his old Safilo metal frame with glass executives. It took me years to get him out of the execs and into a 35. I remade those lenses with every RX change for nearly 20 years into his Safilo frame.

At some point in the mid 90s I believe his wife threw his glasses in the garbage hoping for a change in style. 20 years in the same frame was enough for her. My father came to my shop and did not like a single frame I had to offer. He finally stumbled upon my Titmus safety frame collection and found a safety frame almost identical to the old Safilo. So there I was, processing heavy thick glass 35s into a safety frame to make my father happy.

My father is still alive and well up in the southern tier of western N.Y. You cannot miss him, he is the guy with the 1/4 inch deep nose pad depressions on his nose from wearing glass safety lenses 24/7 for the last decade or so. The guy has only owned 2 frames since the 70s. One being the old dependable Safilo. I told him they were out of business so lets keep that between us:D

I am sorry to say that Safilo is a sorry shell of what it used to be quality wise.

Others may disagree, or say that the Elasta line is still fantastic. I say...how many Elasta 3000 Series are we still selling. Damn shame.

Sidenote=I do want to thank Safilo for letting its quality tank. It has lead me to better and smarter buying that has lead to increased profits, better bottom line, and far less headaches.

    Thats too bad Fezz,

Like I said, its been years since I have touched one. I imagine many of the old great ones have lost their quality.
I suppose in todays marketplace it would not be cost effective to make a frame that would outlast the style.
If everyone was like my father, we would all be out of business.;)

The man loves his thick glass!!!

And the lenses are in excellent condition. Everytime I tried to get him out of glass, he would throw that fact in my face.
    He's right.
If I ever put him in plastic lenses they would be scratched up in a week.

    Leo

If the old frame is a YGF Johnny I have a brand new one still in the box. It's one of those things that I have intended to throw away for the past six years (since I retired) but I just cant bring myself to do it.

I still have a few AO Airflights and an adequate supply of glass Panoptics to last me. Thank goodness there are still some other old timers out there who are still fabricating glass. I just love my Airflights and panoptics. Nothing beats the quality of the vision with these lenses (and, yes, I've worn everything new to come down the pike.)

PS I also have a few Tura Mr. T's and Safilo Monza's kicking around.

No more G-15 Glass? I hated it when the uniform density G-15 was discontinued.
