    Prism seg in trifocal?

    Hi, all.

For those of you with experience in cemented segs, I've got a competitive shooter who wears 8x35's for general use and a spot seg for shooting. She's been wearing 2D Bi at distance because the docs didn't realize a prism seg was possible. Her near prism is unnecessary for the shooting glasses but what to do on her 8x35's? My lab suggested a ribbon seg for intermediate be cemented on top of a 35mm prism seg. Why wouldn't it work to just surface a FT35 w/prism and cut it down to 8x35 dimensions and then cement THAT instead of the multiple gluings?

Do any of you have a favorite lab for custom work like this?

    Thanks in advance.

    additional info

    Good point:

    -2.50 -2.00 x 05
    -3.00 -2.00 x 05

    +2.50 add ou

    2BI near only

I didn't clock the BC on her old lenses but I believe they're in the neighborhood of +2.50

    Thanks!

You can grind your distance oc out about 6.5 mm, instead of the usual
inset, and then decenter the job using the distance oc. some seg will disappear, so start with the widest possible.
Ex: +2.50 add power decentered an extra 5 mm= 1 diopter base in

    almost...

    OBX,

If I had a 45mm segment to start out with, no problem. She's wearing the 8x35 due to her near and intermediate workload (physician) and unfortunately is rather petite. I definitely could try to get her into a larger frame resembling owl eyes - maybe an old Deeda?!...

    Thanks for the idea, though!

    Chip,

Good idea. What lab would you suggest? AND, are Franklin segs glued at the seams at all? The lab I used last didn't use any and the thing just fell apart at the slightest bump.

    Franklin Trifos

    Hi Kyle

Over the years I've made a lot of Franklins including a few Trifos, what I normally do is have a FT 35 Bifo made (Distance and Intermediate) then cut the NV lens under the Int. as an Executive style. In your example this would be ideal as the prism is at near only and it won't come out too bulky looking at the Rx

I have NEVER used any glue on my jobs, the trick is to get the touching surfaces matching exactly in line and curve, not easy, but practice makes it happen. A tight fit in the frame also helps.... very seldom have lenses come out.

I'm probably too far away to offer any help....... but if............

    It's coming

I have just written a new article with pictures on how to make a Franklin Bifocal. Will post on Optiboards soon if I can figure out how to get it posted.
It makes it simple enough where even a newbie can do it.
