sport goggles under a hockey helmet

Hi there Optiboard! Been lurking here for a few months, finally have a question that I need some help with...

Have a patient who is a ~+4.50 -1.25 OU, 10 years old, very active. He plays hockey a lot and has never worn his glasses while playing because they do not fit, nor give any protection under his current helmet. My office hasn't fit him in anything yet, but they have tried an option from Wal-Mart that he can't see out of (I've not seen this pair yet). They have tried what we have in stock for sports goggles (a few of the Z-Leader from Hilco) and they do not fit under his helmet very well. They tend to get lifted off his nose.

My question, does anyone have a suggestion of someplace to look for a better solution to my young patient's dilemna? We've only tried the Z-Leader, and the only other line I know a little about is the Rec-Specs from Liberty. Any other options for a child? The biggest requirment is being able to wear it while playing hockey.

    Thanks in advance!

    Bryan

PS. he's coming in next week for a CL fitting and training, we'll see how that goes as well.

My suggestion would have been the Helmet-Spec from Liberty.

I have done many smaller glasses under the face mask. Works great.

Back when I played goal, I used the Rx-able insert from a pair of Bolle ski goggles inside my helmet. I couldn't stand a full frame with temples that pressed against the side of my head. So I mounted the Bolle by using shrink tubing on the posts, and then put the tubing between the helmet shell and padded liner. Looked funny, but worked great. The frame was off my face, and didn't give me any grief if I took a slap shot or an elbow in the face.

Also, by having the lenses a little further off my face, I was less prone to fogging.

If you would use some Zero-Fog you would have Zerofog.

I wish that worked - I'm working with an adult under the same premise - hockey helmet and trying to find something that doesn't ride up when the helmet is on. Hockey helmets fit very close all around the head and tend to push against anything on the side of the head - in this case the mounting for the strap. Pushes the goggles up and out. I've got a pair of WileyX on order that have a slimmer temple that I hope will extend far enough past the helmet's padding that they won't be pushed up and out.

I don't have experience on hockey helmets, but I have had luck on football helmets by cutting a groove into the ear pad area to accommodate temples/straps. The biggest problem is keeping the glasses in place while putting the helmet on/off, but once on, they tend to stay in place.

    Be verrrrrry careful with that!

A recent study (no, I don't have a reference!) showed that most significant head injuries while playing football happened with a side impact. As a result, many companies are significantly increasing the amound of padding around the sides of the helmet. If you remove some to fit specs, I would assume you have some legal responsibility if the player is injured.

I would suggest the Mag-1 specs. This is a nylon front with a strap. I use it for firefighters, hockey players, fencers, wack-jobs and psychos!

Don't know where to get them as a civilian, but the universal gas mask inserts used by the military would fit well under the helmet. Not sure of the safety aspects.

It was a rubbery front with a band for temples and fit very close.

I too would suggest the Mag 1 made by Criss. It meets safety standards and has no temples, just a rubber strap in an S-7 shape.

Anyone have contact info for Criss? The Mag 1 looks like my best option.

thanks for the info everyone, I'll be looking into Criss Optical to see what they offer. I'll let everyone know what ends up working (if anything) for my patient.
