    How its Made-Discovery Channel

I really like this show. I know, I know--****NERD ALERT****

But, The episode I saw yesterday showed how they make prosthetic eyes.
Very cool. I have read up on the process and have always been interested in it. I even wanted to learn and specialize in it at one point! To see how it is really done was fascinating.

So, how many Optiboarders have actually done it? I am pretty sure I remember that Chip Anderson has. Anybody else?

I offered to work at a practice for half the salary to learn it and couldn't get a taker, I offered to clean toilets with a tooth brush and couldn't get a taker. I contacted the worshipful company of spectacle makers for their program on how to fabricate prosthetics and nothing. Chip, offered once to teach, but I can't move to MS although the gesture was appreciated. It is a guarded craft.

If you folks really want to know I will see if I can video tape the next one I do (Somewhere I already have such a tape) and make copies for those that do.

Can't go to you for any hands on though.

    Chip,

I will bow down in humble gratitude for such a tape. Name the price.

You may want to check out Fred Harwin's website at: www.fredharwin.com
I recently heard him speak and he is an amazing artist and has people coming to Portland from all over the world for his custom made prosthetics.

    Chip,

I think you should do a course on this...I know you can't "TEACH" it in one single course, but what a great idea. The art is dying...and you could do this.

I know you don't like many other courses because of lack of true "education", so why not?

    Chip,

I would be forever grateful if you could pass the video or information on. I do have some questions on the actual process that I would like to ask by PM. Thanks!

I spent a two months at American Optical’s Monoplex Eye Department in Southbridge, MA back in the early 70,s. I was fortunate to sit at the right hand of Roger Alton. In addition to fabricating “stock” eyes and fitting kits we did two custom fittings every day. These individuals would come from all over the world and they would present to a half dozen artist/craftsmen for an exact march of all components of the eye.

One person would match the color and veining of the sclera and another just did the iris, etc. The final product was cured and then the hard part began – getting motility of the prosthesis to match, as close as possible, the other eye. Of course, much depended on the anatomy of the socket and the state of the conformer but it was truly amazing what came out of that building. The best thing was the hugs and tears of joy at the end of the day. Nothing like it.

Then, along came OSHA and screwed everything up.

They also had a show on making eyeglass frames. It looks like they were in the Randolph Engineering plant where they made the old AO Skymaster copies. And they had one on making lenses also.

As for the prosthetic eyes, back in the 70's I had a friend that had a US flag painted on his prosthetic eye. He also had a regular one too, but he sure got looks when talking to people with the flag-eye!

I have one patient who had me make him one with a Banditos Motorcycle gang emblem for a spair. He also has a Marine Corp emblem one, and a black one. But the absolute best one was one my friend Vernon Lamb made for himself with a picture of a nude woman in the pupil, said that when he went hunting, they figured this was what was on his mind and either co-operated or flaked off in a hurry, saving him a lot of time.
