Which is better on a name tag?

We are getting new name tags. There is a discussion on what they should say. Which do you think is better?

    Certified optician or A.B.O.C.

From a consumer standpoint I would argue A.B.O.C.

Titles are tossed around today. Wal-Mart even has associates.

Some states dictate what it should say. In Ohio it has to have your full name and state you're licensed and weather your spectacle or CL or both.

    Optical Savant sounds good.

    Or maybe, Magnificent Optician.

    Seriously;

    Certified Optician, ABOC

Nobody is going to know what ABOC is, so if you have both as written above-The patient knows that you are certified and that ABOC stands for something related to being certified.

Fezz is right - ABOC would work but your office would have to put some effort into educating your customers about certification or else it would have no clear meaning to them.

I would vote: ABOC. My reasoning is this: saying you're a certified optician is like calling yourself an accountant. Calling yourself an ABOC is like calling yourself a CPA.

Of course, the public doesn't know much about optician qualifications or lack thereof. In my experience, using this title always seemed to strike up curiosity and it lead to some dialog with the customer, thus educating them.

I have a friend that was so passionate about being an ABOC that she actually had her title on her personal checks !

    Promoting Your Professional Status
You've got it - flaunt it! Making the general public and your customers or patients aware of the distinction of your certification works to your advantage. Here are a few ways to promote your distinction as a certified optician or contact lens technician:

Always display your certificate prominently at your work place.
Wear your ABO or NCLE certification lapel pin at work.

Use your ABO or NCLE certified logos on your business cards, letterhead, all and displays.

Use your designations ABOC, ABOC-AC or NCLEC, NCLE-AC, or ABOM, if you are a Master ) after your name or signature on letters, business cards and when you register for conventions and conferences. (If you register with the designations after your name they will also appear on your convention badge.)

"What does ABOC stand for" this is a question that I get a lot from our patients. Its a great opener and a darn good chance to educate the patients about the need of having a certified optician take care of them. My vote, A.B.O.C.

If I had a name tag (personally I hate them) it would look like this:

    Average Joe, ABOC
    Certified Optician

Since I'm the one and only optician in this office, I don't wear a name tag. But I do have my ABO certificate displayed prominantly in the dispensary.

    Mine would probably read:

    Yurs Truly, ABOC
    Dispensing Optician

I keep my ABO certificate on the wall, and the office has an ABO certified sticker on the front window.

I hate wearing name tags. We are a small office. I don't have one but if I did it would say:

From the MA Rules and Regs......

Every dispensing optician shall, during any time in which he or she is engaged in the practice of opticianry, attach to his or her jacket, coat or other garment in a conspicuously visible manner an identification badge or tag which sets forth in large print his or her name and license number. If he or she is employed by another person, corporation or business entity, he or she shall also set forth on the badge the name of his or her employer, and the dispensing optician license number of his employer where applicable. The dispensing optician shall wear the identification badge or tag so that it is visible to any individual meeting or communicating with the optician in person.
