    Handstone help

Hi everyone it's been a long time since I've needed help from the board but I'm sure someone can help.

I'm using a Weco 590 hand stone (it's new name is the Smooth II) and over time it has gotten quite "buzzy" or "chattery" when feathering glass lenses. Instead of that nice smooth feeling it feels like I'm doing up the zipper on my coat! It leaves quite a few chips and stars after feathering which cannot be removed even after dressing the wheel with a white stick.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Thank you in advance...Don.

    Blue Jumper Dressing stick.....................

Put your dressing stick in water for a few minutes and the move it gently over the surface. Thsi will correct your problem.

If the dressing stick does not do the trick, you may have to get real aggressive. I have used a "truing device" and diamond truer. You can try www.universalphotonics.com or probably any other equipment supplier. Hate to see you get into that, hopefully the dressing stick will do the trick.

Once a vitrified wheel starts to "chatter" it requires truing unless the wheel retaining nut has loosened (you should be so lucky.) You can dress it till it rains bicycles and it will still chatter. If you do not have a trueing device you may be able to have it trued by an industrial supply house. Call around. You will have to remove the wheel but thats not a problem.

Hey . . . Thats a good project for a State Opticians Society. Why not maintain a set of these special tools and make them available to loan to members.

I've always used gray sticks on fine diamond wheels, the white sticks for roughing wheels. I also wet the stick, start up the edger or hand stone to full speed then turn it off, putting preasure on the wheel with the stick until the friction stops the wheel. I'll continue to do this (about 2-3 times) until I get the results I'm looking for. ( note; do not use a dressing stick on a plated wheel, you'll knock all the diamonds off it!)

Wheels get rusty and out of balance. Clean the rust from inside of the wheel if there is any.

    Maybe.....

How old is your wheel? If dressing sticks don't help try using a scrap PGX lens(a nice thick one) and just push hard and grind the pi** out of it. Tha t has done the trick for me before. Maybe it's just time for a new wheel??

Sometimes the motor mounts get rusty too. It'll cause a lot of vibration and jumping.

Just a thought,, are you also using this stone to touch off poly lens? If so you may have a build up on the wheel. If you are touching off poly wet the wheel and use a glass lens to clean the stone.
