    Question re latest technlogy

In a sentence...what would you say has been the biggest change/development/new technology that's impacted your work in the last 5 years?

(Context: I've been away from the industry having children for five years and am gearing up for interviews to return to work and I want to make sure I'm up to date:D)

Looking forward to hearing your views!

I would say short corridor progressive and AR improvements. I was at home for 3 years before coming back last year and that was what stuck out to me.

If my memory serves me the minimum fitting height for progressives was 17mm as I left....and I did have to explain the the that A/R coatings needed to be cleaned carefully....what's available now?

    Digitally Surfaced Lenses

Individualized lenses cut using digital surfacing, (freeform), is the biggest revolution to hit the industry. This technology will change the way lenses are made. It will take 10 years or more for this to gain large market share but it is the way to make lenses in the future.

On CL, all kinds of new disposible are now abailable. Hydrogel, 30-night and many other extended wear. Biomed merge w/ Cooper. Discountinued brandnames ....

Get urself familar w/ huge change in PAL. New design, new technologies, brand names

Get to know new lens materials - trivex, 1.70 (HOYA), 1.74 (Essilor)

If u do insurance: learn the consolidation in the industry.

Same on frame: familar w/ brand names and the company behind them.

Digital surfacing come to mind first and foremost. New materials and processing techniques in frames allowing for more design options. AR durability, better/tougher SRCs, shorter fit PALs, and Essilor taking over all the labs in the United States (just checking to see if you're still reading) also are big issues.

    Safer chemicals and machines

Now safer and more Eco-friendly chemicals are available. Also, now "UL rated" tint machines are available. Good people should have safer chemicals and machines.

Lens materials & designs. Keith Benjamin has been kind enough to share his PAL Chart. Its somewhere on this board and also at his Laramy K forum. Very useful. Any wholesale lab should be able to give you spec sheets on materials.

Good luck to you and welcome back!!

Ian't that the same thing as "Eco Friendly Chemicals"?

Just today I had two customers ask what kind of Eco-Friendly Chemicals we used. They were ecstatic when I let them run their fingers over the UL labels we had affixed to our microwave !

Redhot Jumper Everybody plugging, so will I................

Doing away with the old smelly tint pot .............using a microwave and a patented lens tinting system that lets you dye lenses up to 100 times faster, where you can reach dark colors on poly and high index in just 4- 6 minutes and all of it without the requirement of extra ventilation.

I have been in the industry for about ten years now. I have seen new indexes, new PAL's, new frame materials, new contact lenses, but there has nothing that got consumers more happy than the "easy to clean" AR.

Second, maybe the introduction of the Acuvue 2.

I'm still leaning this Micro-Tint technology myself. But, per their website:

HOW TO MAKE A GRADIENT TINT
As the tinting process is many fold faster than the conventional dye-pot way it is still possible to make gradient tints. This is called a Negative Gradient. This is done by tinting the whole lens and then using the gradient equipment to remove the color instead of applying it.
