National letter designation

FYI. Canadian opticians should soon be using a national letter designation. B.C, Alberta, Ontario, and Newfoundland all have, or will have soon, adopted the RO designation for "registered optician." In Ontario this designation denotes contact lens opticians, since all Ontario opticians hold both eyeglass and contact certification, while B.C. and Alberta recognize CLP as "contact lens practitioner." In Alberta, it is a reserved title which is legislated, and in B.C, it is currently only recognized in principle. Other Provinces are showing interest in a unified designation as well. Someday, I may be posting as D.Nelson, RO,CLP. Maybe someday I can add (ret) to that, but not anytime soon. Any comments from the peanut gallery?

Actually, CLP (contact lens practitioner) should be RCLP (registered contact lens practitioner). We were really pushing for the designation "gifted ophthalmic dispenser". :bbg:

A national designation is in the works. There are letter designations Provincially, but the goal is to standardize them. Here in B.C. the letters have been adopted in principle, but are not in use yet. The letter designation proposal is part of the labour mobility initiative, which will have standard examinations for opticians, as well as a "portable" license which will allow Canadian opticians to move from province to province without having to re-qualify. Eventually, we may be able to gain license reciprocity with some states as well.
Michelle, since you are, or soon will be, registered in B.C. as an optician, you may refer to yourself as a "registered optician," or, RO. You may also use the letters PRO. which has a nice profession look to it.

I know in NS we have the right to use DO after our names as "Dispensing Optician"...can get confusing with OD's and DO's though....lol

So Colleges , you say your mandate is protecting the public, if that is the case then it also follows that maintaining the publics trust, in the profession that you regulate would also be of importance . IF it is then what is being done to maintain that trust and respect and let the public know what to look for ?

College people probably read these posts so here are 2 questions for each of the provincial Colleges :

(1) What was your budget in each of the past 5 years for Public Awareness advertising ?

(2) In what mediums did you advertise Public awareness ?

I have read Gary's many posts, complaining that the Ontario College of Opticians has not done this or that, or is not doing this or that, or could have/should have done this or that.

Why doesn't GARY run for a COLLEGE Board position and TRY to change things, instead of always being the negative, chronic COMPLAINER.

D.O. is a designation for Doctor of Osteopathy (Medical Doctorate given by another line of training same rights, priviledges as M.D.) Of course we did once have a dispenser who used DpO after his name, looked very official, ment nothing.

Hi, just checking to see what initials we are allowed to use after our names for both Optician and Contact Lens Fitter.

Also, in the states when we're certified we say "american board certified"
In Canada, do they say "canadian board certified" ???
