It's actually made from Gamma Butyrolactone.

gamma-Butyrolactone (γ-butyrolactone or GBL) is a hygroscopic colorless oily liquid with a weak characteristic odor and is soluble in water. GBL is a common solvent and reagent in chemistry and is used as an aroma compound, as a stain remover, as a superglue remover, as a paint stripper, and as a solvent in some wet aluminium electrolytic capacitors. In humans it acts as a prodrug for GHB, and it is used as a recreational intoxicant with effects similar to alcohol.

GBL is a prodrug of GHB. To bypass GHB restriction laws, home synthesis kits were introduced to transform GBL and/or 1,4-B into GHB. GBL can also be used as a recreational drug by itself.[6]

FDA warning against products containing GHB and its prodrugs, such as GBL.

GBL overdose can cause irrational behaviour, severe sickness, coma and death. [7]
Metabolism takes place in stomach and blood plasma. Both the duration and onset of GBL are shorter than of GHB. Otherwise, effects are similar to GHB, although weight for weight GBL is significantly more powerful due to being absorbed faster and its higher bioavailability, meaning dosage must be lowered accordingly. If taken undiluted by mouth, GBL can cause esophageal and gastro-intestinal irritation. It is possible for oral ingestion of GBL to cause nausea and other similar problems, possibly more so than with GHB.

I'm not saying you should drink the stuff, only that it works well for getting markings off lenses and that it is not acetone therefore safe on poly.....and it's cheap.

One does not have to drink chemicals to get the effects into the body, inhalation of the fumes does the same job and works faster than drinking it. It is not acetone, it it just carries the name acetone and has an FDA warning againt it.

..................and for the last remark highlited in red-brown I am just frowning at the word buying and using it because it is cheap, right here on OptiBoard where you value your services and quality, against the consumer, who is more and more leaning towards buying cheap glasses on-line.

Even the Wal-Mart opticals, at least here in Canada, are using products that are made for that purpose and do not shy away from them because they are too expensive.

If that is your attitude which it obviously is, you should be in full understanding that you approve that your customers purchase their glasses on-line because they are cheap.

The cheaper the better, so must be the lenses and frames and other supplies you buy and sell.
