    Confused Problem with Autograph?

Someone in my office sold the Autograph to a new progressive lens wearer. He is moderately nearsighted with a +1.50 add. When he put them on he immediately commented that the side vision was blurry. Distance was great straight ahead and reading was good. I explained that the peripheral in progressives is never as good as straight ahead and told him to try them. I explained that it is normal to take a couple of weeks to adjust.

Well, he called me tonight before I left work and again complained about the peripheral areas. He said it was very blurry. He also said they were giving him a headache.

Now I had thought the Autograph was supposed to be so great and the distance excellent. I have never used this lens before.

Has anyone with more experience with lens had problems like this? He is coming back on Saturday. Any advice is appreciated.

Yes. But he acts like it is so bad. He says he can hardly see out of the sides of his lenses. Now, my add is +2.25 and I can see out of the sides of my progressives, not as well as straight ahead, but it isn't horrible. He acts like it is truly horrible.

I always set seg hts low on myopes especially 1st timers. I know you are not suppose to but I rarley have a problem setting them just at pupil bottom. I always read them the riot act that the side vision will not be as sharp as straight ahead, but in time will improve with adaptation.

The fitting height is 18.5. He picked them up on Thursday morning and and complained right away. He called that evening. His last glasses were single vision.

I will recheck them tommorrow, but I wanted to know what experiences with this lens other people have.

Blue Jumper Every PAL has Distortion...............

Any progressive lens, add 1.50 and up, even the ones made in heaven, as well as the ones made in hell..................do have good lateral distortion.

There are alsways people that are very sensitive to lateral distortion which drives them crazy and they can not get used to it.

Make up some progressive lenses in trial lens rims, plano add +1.50 and up, and set the trial frame with these lenses adjusted to be dead on, on their face and let them judge for themselves if they can stand the distortion.

Add 150 is should not be have much lateral distortion. because it is low to medium add.

    Question?
    1. he use corridor 13 or 15 or ? ( I think may be 13 or shorter)
    2. this problem at distance lateral or intermediate lateral or near lateral.

If everything right . You will re educate patient about PALs and manage hope of patient.

To the best of my knowledge the Autograph is based on the Genesis design, known for having a very generous distance zone (The short corridor version is not available in the US market). If your client fixes his gaze at an eye level object/text there should be little if any blur when the head is turned to the side.

My guess is that the your client is seeing the blur in the intermediate periphery, certainly disconcerting to the first time PAL wearer. My solution has been to do a walk around in the office querying the client as to the extent, if any, of significant changes in perspective after I've pointed out where there will or will not be more or less bluring in various fields of gaze.

However, some folks are very sensitive to these aberrations, even when they have been properly prepared for their existence, requiring a bit more "hand holding" than is usually the case.

check the basics 1st, PD, SEG HGT, and BASE CURVE.
the bc should be within .75d of his old glasses, if he is a new progressive patient it's all in the sale and the expectation given to him by you.
if you lead him to believe that his lenses are the best thing on the planet, he will almost always be dissapointed. given the correct info he will understand that eventually sometimes 60 days or more. the brain will start to ignore blur in a progressive.
as for autograph being based on the genisis design,, only that they are both "soft design lenses" you are using a great lens so changing brands i dont think will solve anything..

:p The most important thing is the time when you introduced the lens to the customer and how you have set their expectations about the lens and how it works. We have to tell them everything about the lens, its functions, advantages and disadvantages. After explaining everything to the customer, put the progressive trial lens set on the customer so he/she could see what it is going to be like.

For a MYOPE presbyope progressive lens wearer, the optician has to give the person one step over or the optician has to make sure that the patient see green little bit better than red on the chart. This is to help the patient with MYOPE presbyope see better on the side of the progressive lens - distant zone.

I'm going to bet that there's nothing wrong with the glasses. He probably expected too much. I can never stress how important it is to educate the patient BEFORE they get their glasses on what they will experience.(not saying you didn't) If he's never worn glasses before, has a mild distance rx, always worn readers, he needs more education than most. Especially if he's a 1st time progressive wearer with an add over 150. Doesn't matter what progressive you put him in.

It's going to take time and if he cannot deal with that, put him in a line.(trifocal probably) It's not worth getting beat up over.

I didn't fit this patient, I just dispensed them so I don't know what he was told. The optician that fit him no longer works for us.

I did end up putting him in a lined bifocal. I just thought his reaction was very unusual. His rx was similar to mine but with a lower add. Most people just don't react that strongly.

    Happylady ,
Your case is not about the problem of Autograph , but is about the expectation of the wearer.
If you have the trial PALs and used our technic , this problem will never happen.
The most of the first time myope PALs wearer will expect in PALs too much , because they think they have to pay much more money if compare with the single vision that they used every day for many year. Most of them think , they pay many time expensive than SV and they have to get everything better on the PALs. They have a lot of hope and when their PALs was ready , they put the PALs on and the hope is gone and feel terrible and try to find out the distortion of the PALs all the time , instead to try to used it.

We are realy sorry that we can not help you in this case , Happylady.
Our recommendation is no try PALs in Trial Frame , no sell.

Definately use a penlight and marking pen to spot his pupils. Make sure rhe fitting marks are dead straight across. Even a little crooked doesn't seem to work with freeform. Please keep us posted if your patient needs an Rx change or what the problem was

It's been awhile with this patient. But I think it is interesting what you posted. Freeform is very unforgiving if it is a little off?

I ALWAYS use a penlight and marking pen but not everyone does.

Forgot to mention that pantoscopic tilt is a must as well as vertex distance must be as close to lashes as possible. I put the new Kodak Unique on my owner's wife and only got the wow after the proper panto was applied.
