Copy of rx without payment of exam....

Does your OD give a copy of the patient's eyeglass rx if payment in full is not made at the time of the exam, or is it common pratice to give it without payment? From my understanding it is not illegal to hold it, but not look upon as good ethics??

This issue has been brought up and I was curious as to how your office handles this situation.

I don't understand why this would even come up. I can understand someone forgetting their wallet, but willfully coming to an exam without insurance or some form payment is rediculious. But anyways , my thought is to withhold the RX until full payment is recieved, I don't see an ethical dilemma.

I see nothing wrong with holding an Rx until payment is made. The eye exam is a service that must be paid for. Until the patient has paid, they should not benefit from the service.

If payment is approved by a 3rd party (insurance) then that is in effect payment and the Rx should be released then.

It's been common practice to hold it at every office I've been in.

We expect payment at the time of service unless they have insurance that will pay for the exam. Every once in a while someone doesn't have money or thought they had insurance and they don't. We never give the prescription out until the exam is paid for.
