    Salaries

    Hi Dr. B,

There is an Optical buying group (in San Diego, California) that did a survey for "California" salaries which included salaries for OD, Opticians and Receptionists.

    Website: www.vweye.com

Or you can reach them by phone:
    (800) 640-9485

    Hopefully they can help you...

    Dr. B,

There is a website that compares salaries in different states that I use to see what I could make in other regions of the US. The link is http://www.opticiantraining.org/optician-salary/ Hope that helps.

Average annual salary for an optician is around $32,940 per year and the hourly wage is around $15.84 per hour.

It's kind of distressing to know that our trade is not considered valuable enough to merit a living wage .( at least here in the St. Louis area) I understand a few years ago, Opticians tried to get licensure here in Missouri but the Optometrists vehemently opposed it saying it would raise wages up "too high" Too high for whom? I started in this trade in 1987, I have worked in labs and on the retail floor, but when I lost my job about 5 years ago, it was hard to find a job paying more than 10 dollars an hour and forget about benefits! Finally did and am doing pretty well now but, I can only see it growing worse.

Luckily there are a few optometrist out there that understand a good optician deserves a good wage & benefits. Here in Missouri I have seen the wages range from min wage to roughly $25 an hour for non-optical manager opticians. I have seen an optical manager make about 30 an hour. For those that are making sub $10 an hour as an optician I say quit and go "big box". When I was at LC after commission I averaged $13 an hour. Not great but, seems better than working for a doc that values your expertise less than Luxottica.

Most here consider Opticianry a profession, not merely a trade. Could this be one reason we are in such a place, no real structure across the country?

Look to the National Academy of Opticianry's website. You will see a place to get their annual salary survey. It is always higher than the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, and is around 40K annually. There is some variation between licensed and unlicensed states, but not as much as widely believed.

Continue to add to your knowledge and make yourself valuable + Be a great employee + Contribute to the bottom line + Find a good place and stay there = Higher salary in any profession. Elimination of any of these factors makes it harder to command a top salary.
