    Ultra opics coater and Crizal

Can someone enlighten me on compatability of Ultra optics coater (poly) and applying Crizal coating. Is it possible or the hard coating has to be applied at the same facility as AR?

As far as I know Crizal which is Essilor, is applied only on their proper hard coat (thermocure) as far as I understand.

So, if you coat it with the Ultra Optic coater, which is UV cure they might not do it or have to strip the coating, if it is strippable.

    Better check with Pete Hanlin

There are other AR coating labs that do use UV cure hard coats, check them out.

    Yes!
I have no problems with Zeiss or House ARs.
I just want a DEFINATE answer. Because when I sent some lenses uncoated to apply AR they forgot to put the back side coating and ruined the lenses.

You have an Authorized Crizal Lab that allows you to send in lenses that you surfaced for Crizal AR Coating? (I know it can be done with Zeiss and others like you said, but Crizal?) I have yet to hear of that ? Please correct me if I misunderstood the original post. I would be interested to hear where/which lab is allowing you to do this, since everything I've been told is that it HAS to be surfaced and hardcoated at their lab so they can guarantee the exact substrate origin and hard coating etc...

Did you send these to a Crizal authorized lab?
Did you order AR and Hard Coating? or Just AR?
An Ultra Optics UV cured hard coating can be AR coated, however AR adheasion can vary depending on the process used applying the AR and how the lens surface is pretreated.

I can understand why the lens might have to be hard coated in Crizal lab but can you explain me Why it cant be surface outside!?
What about CR-39 lenses that dont have to be hard coated?

    AR processing

Before AR coating a lens it is much better to hard coat the lens first. CR-39 needs to be hard coated and etched for the bonding of the hard coating.

AR coating requires proper steps along the way for each different lens material for proper bonding of the hard coating to the lens and the AR to the hard coating.

    AR lens material

    Surfacing and AR?

There are variables from surfacing lab to lab. Alloy vs. wax blocking. Lens blank used is also a consideration depending on the mold release agent used. One CR-39 lens manufacturer may use a release agent that would be a problem for AR processing and another one will not require as much lens pre preparation.

Essilor/Crizal will only apply Crizal or Crizal-Alize to lenses on their approved list...basically lenses that then know they can strip off the factory hardcoats and apply their own TD2 hardcoat (which is the basecoat for Crizal and Crizal-Alize).

Only Essilor certified labs can manufactuer lenses to be coating with TD2 and/or Crizal/Crizal-Alize.
