    PALs prescription.

    Hi all.

I used to face some patients who never wear eye glasses before. In cases of these patients, I often find that they have little refractive error such as little hyperopia or astigmatism or mixed astigmatism.

In these cases, what is best prescrition for PALs wear?

I'd like to know your stragies.

Low adds are very forgiving; high adds not so.

    Fitting height matters.

The tasks for which they use the lens matters.

Stick with a premium product from a major manufacturer and you will do high % success.

I have a set of longettes(sp) made with pals with a +2.00 add, a +1.50 add, and a bifocal with a +2.00 add. All have plano distance. I hold the lenses over their eyes and hold a reading up high. I have them follow the card down with their eyes till it is clear. Then I move the card off to the side till it is blurry. I then have the patient turn their head till it is clear. This shows them a little of what a progressive/bifocal is like. I always explain first that it is not their exact rx and might not be perfect.

I generally draw a little picture of the shape of progressives and explain how they will need to look through certain areas to see certain distances. I explain that the sides of the lenses will not be as clear is the center. I also tell them it in normal and common to take a couple weeks or more to be completely comfortable with progressives/bifocals particularly if they have never worn eyeglasses before.
