Anyone know where to find a monocle?

I have a family member who would like me to make him a prescription monocle. Does anyone know where I might be able to find one?

    Thanks!

At the risk of repeating an answer on another thread...

    have you tried Ebay?

My favourite ever glazed glasses were some octagonal opera glasses.

Some of the OTC readers companies are making monocles on chains that are quite stylish (for the ladies at least). May be an option.

Here's another online auction site you could check:

Don't know about monocles (specifically), but you may want to check out this other new thread "Period glasses" ...

    Monocle Lewinsky

Opera Opera Opticians Limited. We are a British company (established in 1978), owned and managed by an Optometrist. We manufacture bespoke custom handmade eyeglass frames, spectacle frames and sunglasses in house at our own English eye glasses frame making factory - in the brand name of Harpers - our registered trade mark. Choose a frame from our standard stock - select from hundreds of different styles, several sizes and in multitude of colours. Alternatively have one made in any style, colour or size. We are able to make a one off copy of any vintage frame. Alternatively, forward a photo you have, off the internet or a link, for example to Johnny Depp , John Lennon , Buddy Holly etc., - to quote for a reproduction hand made frame. Each piece handcrafted and will be unique. Many frames in our standard stock are based on eyewear designs of 1930s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s & 80s & we also hold a vast vintage collection and are a major eyewear supplier to theatre, television & film production companies. Pince-nez, monocles & lorgnettes also stocked. Period settings supplied with the correct spectacles and sunglasses.

If you are more inclined to try and find a monocle than make one - especially an antique or vintage style monocle - here's a lead, albeit from a source in London.

If this monocle-quest is serious enough to warrant further web browsing, I think you will find a lot of possibilites, and many that are accessible online, in my other recent post Antique/vintage and replica eyewear.

    Good Night, And Good Luck.

This is a topic I myself am rather interested in, and, finding this topic through a search, figured I would post the other resources I had found.
I looked mainly into monocles with a "gallery," in other words monocles intended to be worn not held.
Nearly all of the monocles I could find came with some form of standard reading lens, and were not available with a non-standard prescription.

    In the US:
A vintage eyewear dealer whose slogan is "vintage eyewear for everyday use"
    http://www.eyeglasseswarehouse.com/monocles.html
    a modern dealer of monocles:
    http://www.nearsights.com/index.html
and a dealer on amazon.com (Currently DEFUNCT):
    http://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&sear...extbin=Monocle
Also, an 1800s apparel site, which has one model of hand monocle:
    http://www.gentlemansemporium.com/store/001377.php

    In the UK:
The online store of a gentleman who prides himself in the sale of reading glasses:
    http://www.reading-glasses.co.uk/monocle.htm
    http://www.reading-glasses.co.uk/rhodium_monocle.htm

In the European Union at large (Switzerland, I believe)

Monocles were the first monovision application to gain any success. They were intended to correct presbyopia while worn and still allow uncorrected distance vision. I had a professor who wore one and loved it to the exclusion of any other reading correction. Unfortunately, just like pocket watches they fell out of favor when men stopped wearing vests.

I have a few unmounted +3.00 and +6.00 and +9.00 glass spheres in my tool boxes or tackle boxes.

Hey, Ill bet you could sell a ton of these today.

I read another version of the decline of the monocle. It seems they became associated with stereotype versions of Nazis in allied propaganda materials: posters cartoons ect, and needless to say, the demise of the monocle was sealed.

I suspect that you can find all sorts of these at flea markets. Also there are several antique eyewear sites that will probably have some.
You might even find some trial lens holders of the right diameter and drill out the holding tab to hold a chain after grinding a lens for correct Rx and fit.

Try here at the very bottom of the page http://angloamericanopticalltd.com/collections.html

Remember the eyelashes may touch the lens.

We made one last year. Used a circular mold, drilled a hole, and tied it up. Easy as cake.

You just forgot one thing........................it has to be notched on top and the bottom so that it does not slide on the skin, and the hole should be drilled on axis on the temporal side. (a must if you have a cylinder)

Wouldn't be hard for a jeweler to make from gold or gold filled wire and have a lens mounted. It may have to be sized to fit the eye socket and of course the lens power would change because of the vertex change.
