Reference material for the ABO exam

I will be taking the ABO specticle exam in Nov and wanted to know what is recommended as exam prep material. I have the exam prep course from opticaltraining.com which I think is very good, but was wondering if there was other recommended prep material that some of you may have found useful. Any insight is appreciated. Thanks

I read in another thread about a TOPS book that some used for exam prep. Can anyone tell me what book they are refering to and where I can get it?

Hi Pinto, (and anyone else needing review material for ABO or NCLE),

You can now get all the review material you need right on the web, and study at your own pace!

    NEW!
We have posted the entire TOPS manual by Mike DiSanto and a very comprehensive NCLE review by Diane Drake online at www.quantumoptical.com The site offers practice exams which are graded automatically, and each review module consists of approximately 8 full hours of instruction!

Feel free to have a look, and good luck on the exam!

TOPS, I highly recommend it. I looked it over and passed easily. Just don't focus too much on the types of BF lens/material. Not many questions over that section.

BTW, I took the test the pass May and just received my certification.

    ABO Prep

I am a firm believer in hte TOPS book combined with System for Ophthalmic Dispensing by Brooks & Boorish. If you can get an old set of the American Optical books the ones yellow pink blue and green may be of some help

    Good luck on the exam

I agree with Ed_Optician completely. I studied the TOPS manual and System for Ophthalmic Dispensing almost exclusively for the ABO. Both are very good and should be included in any optical library. I am now studying for the Advance-ABO exam and System for Ophthalmic Dispensing is proving to be very informative and actually an easy read. I would also suggest Ophthalmic Dispensing by Stimson. I would also suggest getting a "mentor". This "mentor" should have a solid background in lens finishing, a working knowledge in surfacing and be able to explain older type lens that are not used as often these days. Examples: Ultex A, Executive, Krytok and various glass tints of yesterdays gone by. It has been about 12-14 years since I took the test, but I believe it covered some of that type material. Best of luck. Please feel free to contact me if you need any help, questions, etc. Maybe we could set up a help type chat room for Q&A, etc.
