Toyota has been selling the Prius hybrid for 11 years now. It's tried and true. Over 2 million have been sold. American car companies can't seem to get close to the size of the car, performance, mileage, etc. With the Chevy Volt you have to plug it in and you still don't get the mpg that a Prius gets over say, 100 miles. Toyota expanded the line to include a smaller one for the younger set that gets near 60 mpg, and a bigger crossover/wagon version.

Fortunately or unfortunately, if you buy Toyota, you will get the best that hybrid has to offer for the moment.

It won't be long now before the totally electric vehicles are here, and at least a dozen will be here by 2014. Even if they are no more than commuter cars, and run the kids around to school and soccer cars...do you realize the impact that would have on air quality in places like NY or LA?

Yea, that Finnish car we spent all that U.S. taxpayer $ on.

Why in the world would we spend stimulas $ on a Finnish auto maker?

Yeah...I saw that car at the NY Auto Show recently. Beautiful car, but I think it starts at $145K. No way I would spend that kinda money on a hunk of steel and plastic...I don't care what it does. It's not a car for the masses. Not a hybrid BTW...total electric.

There have also been a number of "Bricking" incedents with the Fisker Karma which must be overcome before the little elves can deliver a truly roadworthy automobile. We will just have to continue to send stimulus money to Finland.

Are we actually sending money to these companies...or are we just offering the tax credit to people that buy these cars...from companies such as this? Not that it justifies it, but the world headquarters of Fisker is in California, and they also have an office in Delaware. So, they are employing Americans.

I would not be in favor of our tax dollars going to a company that makes a car that the majority of Americans could not afford to buy. It should be going to more mainstream companies like GM, Ford, Chrysler...but they haven't done much so far with it. Toyota still has everyone beat.

So speaking of taxes...as gasoline usage has been declining, mostly for economic reasons, and as cars get more efficient, especially in the form of electric vehicles, how will the government make up for lost revenues?

EV drivers won't be buying gasoline at all, so raising te federal and state excise taxes won't affect them.

Whats going to happen is they are going to charge EV's per mile.

    This is typical Dem stuff.

Fund programs by taxing things like .. oh lets say smoking. Then they push to outlaw smoking. Then the funds dry up and they do not have those funds to pay for thier social programs that they set up out of the smoking tax fund. Then as always they want more money from taxpayers.

The average Joe already pays about 50% of thier paychecks on some form of tax.

what I do not understand is why Liberals have not stepped up to the plate and send more to Uncle Sam then is requested. I mean thier the ones who want to raise taxes on everybody else. No one is stopping them from sending more to the feds at tax time.

Oh, I thought it was a Republican plot...to continue a way to give oil companies subsidies, and to fund the protection of their interests in the middle east. I'm glad you straightened us out on that.

Plus there are over 7 million people employed by the oil companies in the US.

Yes companies are people... just in case your buying into the lib mantra that companies are not people.

    Ready?

    Here's your math...

EIA thinks it will produce 350,000 barrels a day by 2035, but most analysts think that estimate is far too low.According to Harold Hamm, president of the energy company Continental Resources, it could produce a million barrels a day by 2020.

Let's forget the 350,000 barrels by 2035, let's trust the agenda pushing owner.

    1 Million Barrels by 2020!

Current U.S. oil consumption per days is 20 Million barrels.

So this is the answer? 5% instead of 2.5%?

Simple math is not propaganda, It's common sense.

Then your forgetting ANWR oil reserves. Drilling off the coast of florida. Bearing Sea oil drilling. The US has the largest oil and natural gas reserves in the world!!

    Simple math man

PS : almost forgot the Utah oil sands, plus Canada's oil supply. we have enough in North America for all of us here and then some

What's the energy footprint of a gallon of ethanol? In other words, how much oil does it take to produce it (ethanol), considering fertilizer, pesticides, farm machinery, etc.?

It takes around 1.3 gallons of oil (or its equivalent) to make a gallon of ethanol. So, maybe not a great idea from that standpoint.

Not even close. Look it up. (We're closer to the top for gas, at #5, than we are on oil, at #14). Note that Canada is a distinct country.

I read a report the other day that hybrid car buyers aren't buying any seconds or replacements on them.
