I checked out that 17th century manuscript on optical. I was so interested I e mailed it to a friend of mine at the University of Lower Slobovia who can translate arabic. He said the regional dialect isn't his area of expertise, but here is his translation of the part that appears on the Ebay photo:

"greetings my friend. did you hear that opticians in balalaalar wish to refract?"
"REFRACT? Opticians? *&##@&#**#$#!!! (loosly translated something about camels and regurgitation) I say unto you, this is a dark day. Swarms of locusts will descend upon the land, and many will go blind."
"But Ahab, I myself have been to balalaalar and seen opticians refracting, and not a locust in sight, nay, not one, nada."
"But many shall the blind be, for the opticians knows not when someone has glaucoma, or the opacification known as cataracts."
"But Ahab, phaco-emulsification has not been invented yet: holy camel-dung, wer'e still shoving hot sticks in people eyes to dislodge a cataract."
"yeah? well I'd like to see an optician do that!"

end of translation. I guess if we want to see how the argument got settled, someone will have to buy the manuscript.

Actully, David, your translation is incorrect. An old camelherder friend of mine said your misinterpretation is understandable considering you didn't use the Rosetta Stone for translation. What it actually says is, "If you kiss my camel on the lips, you will forever be bestowed with bad breath...in which case you will never be able to get close enough to anyone who would want to be refracted by you".

Now watch this...everybody is going to think you were funny and witty, and that I am full of myself. Guaranteed!

"But how shall I impress it on the minds of nurses, and females in general, who, unfortunately, are not in the habit of reflecting deeply on causes and effects..."

From the 1822 book. I'd love to see someone get away with saying something like that today.:hammer:
