I live in Alabama and only about 45 minutes from FL. What are regulations in FL?
How does one become licensed there? Can you work there and not be licensed?

Yes, you should be able to work under a licensed ECP.
If you want your license then you must either be a graduate from an opticianry school or have completed the apprenticeship program. If you are already an optician then you will qualify if you have practice 3 years in a licensed state or 5 years in a non licensed state. In all cases you must take the ABO, NCLE, and the State examinations. Once licensed you can also become board certified( by the Florida board of opticianry) to do contact lens work independently.
Salaries start in the mid 17 and as high as upper 20. Every store that is not owned by an MD or an OD must have Licensed opticians. More and more Doctors are hiring licensed Opticians and Walmart/lenscafters and other big boys are hiring. The need for licenses will continue to expand as the demand increases. Good time to move!

Good Luck
