So, who's going to win? Due to time differences between Hawaii and Germany, I can't watch much of it, only caught Ghana V Italy yesterday, but that was good. Come On England!!!

Shame the USA didn't have a better start. With soccer being such a mass participation game among the young there it should really be the national sport.
Apart from wanting England to win Thursday, my local club has a couple of Trinidad & Tobago internationals, so hope they qualify behind us.

Bite your tounge, football is our real national sport.
I just placed $20.00 at Vegas for Holland at 9 to 1 odds, I picked with my heart, but they do have a good team, so I feel that makes them a good choice.
Brazil and Germany are also big favorites
GO HOLLAND

Not a soccer fan myself - I'm addicted to that arcane and peculiarly American cult that sometimes passes for sport, known as "Major League Baseball" - but I found some interesting new reads for soccer fans who also have a scientific bent:
It's official: Scoring a soccer goal opens the floodgates for many more. June 13, 2006. Soccer minded mathematicians have finally proved one of football's classic cliches - the theory that once a team scores, it opens the floodgates for more goals, and helps the team clinch victory ... http://news.webindia123.com/news/Art...13/361711.html
Engineers Discover Secrets of Soccer Free Kicks. May 20, 2002. Three collaborating groups of researchers have unravelled some of the underlying mysteries of "bending" a soccer ball during kicking which will be a feature of the upcoming Soccer World Cup in Japan and Korea this year... http://www.fluent.com/news/pr/pr43.htm
Science puts extra spin on soccer: Physics and perception play a huge role at World Cup. June 12, 2006. Whether you call it football, futbol or soccer, the game that will capture the world's attention for the next month during the FIFA World Cup is governed by forces other than just a player's hard work, timely reflexes or seemingly magical foot skills. Soccer-enthused scientists have pored over the game at minute levels and found that gravity, friction, and something called the Magnus force all play a role in deciding which team ends up notching a win. And if you've ever thought the referees are blind, one study reveals they actually are, at least when it comes to calling an offside penalty ... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13280094/
The science of World Cup soccer. 09 June 2006. As the soccer World Cup kicks-off in Germany, New Scientist presents this round-up of our favourite science stories related to "the beautiful game". For impossible off-sides, perfect soccer boots, and the only colour for winners to be seen in this season, read on ... http://www.newscientisttech.com/arti...up-soccer.html
Why Goalies Hate the New World Cup Soccer Ball. 12 June 2006. In the opening match of soccer's World Cup Friday, German midfielder Torsten Frings scored an amazing goal from 40 yards out. The ball started off straight and then tailed sharply to the right in the last 10 yards or so. It was an unstoppable shot, but with a different ball it might have been a simple save. A scientist has explained why a new ball being used in this year's World Cup is frustrating goalies ... http://www.livescience.com/othernews...ccer_ball.html

The USA were pretty stylish in their 1-1 draw with Italy. It was like they really enjoyed passing the ball around, and was a pleasure to watch. Which of course means they will never succeed against more cynical styles of hoofing the ball up to a 7 foot tall forward.
Wonder if the Aussies can beat Brazil.
I thought the USA looked terrific vs. Italy (watched the whole game). I noticed the passing too, but thought on one or two occasions someone just needed to pull the trigger and take a shot on goal.
For a few seconds there, I was jumping all over when the US scored that second goal- but the official was spot on in calling the offsides/interference.
Holding off a 10-9 man advantage for that length of time was epic! Let's hope the US team has the chance to go further in the tournament!

Im sure someone random is going to win it, like jamacia lol!
That would indeed be a miracle for a team not even entered in the competition.Originally Posted by 66Lenses

It was crazier than when the Sox won the World Series!
Go Ronoldo or what ever his name is!
Jamacia is not entered? Oh I have mistaken a friendly match for a world cup match, my mistake. I think England need to play a lot better if they are going to stand against teams like Brazil, they seem to be getting all their goals in the last 20 minutes.
Oh NO! England is out I can't believe it, well, I can actually, but what a pity! I was very surprised at the Brazil/France game too! France is IN!
Oh what the heck, go Portugal...

Germany vs Italy tonight, should be interesting to watch. Germany has never beaten Italy in previous encounters, if media reports are to be believed.
