    Advanced Exam?

Hello everyone, I sit for the NOCE Advanced Exam on the 21st wich is 11 days aways and I feel as though I am prepared.

I have always valued this board as a place of knowledge and individuals on the cutting edge so if anyone has any pointers or tip for the test, even maybe some questions to try and stump me not only will I appreciate them, but encourage them. Thank you for your support.

Many have attempted this exam, and thought themselves ready. Please make sure you do some studying and do not assume it is not difficult. It is a tough exam. It has some information on business and other things not necessarily related to optics, which should be covered in you application materials.

This is a valuable personal experience. I wish you good luck, and please let us know how you felt when the exam was completed and your outcome.

    Best regards,
    Warren

Warren the first time I took it I underestimated the exam and it was the business part that screwed me. I have read and re-read through 4 books on optical management, formulas, lens surfacing, and an ophthalmic dictionary to make sure I have a complete understanding of all te terms that I need. Thank you for the advice and I wish I had someone like you the first time around telling me that it was not a cake walk.

    ACE book

    Harry,

Any chance that you got the Advanced Certification Exam Review Book from the National Academy of Opticianry. No guarantee, but it's got a lot of information in it.

Thank you for the suggestion of the book. I ordered a few books from the NAO a couple of months back, they were listed in the ABO's pamphlet.

Good luck, Harry. Once you're done, be sure to start working on your thesis so you can earn your ABOM certification.

Thank you Darryl, the gesture means alot coming from you. I think I have mentioned to you before that I plan on writing the thesis about high wrap Rx's, but I really don't know what I am going to write about. Any way thank you and I will let you know, of course; the results.

That would certainly be a very germane topic.

It would be an appropriate topic, however I think matrix notation of a prescription would be an interesting topic as well and it seems to be more cryptic to most opticians.

I think what is holding me back from making a decision is,

"do I write about something I know about and punch out a quick paper, or do I write about something that requires research and effort on my part"

I am kinda tempted to write about something I have no idea about and spend some time researching a subject. I feel as though this will give more meaning to the paper and the level it helps me to attain.

First let me focus on passing the advanced test then I will put my energy into a paper, untill then the topic is undecided.

Well, you will certainly further yourself more by researching a topic you know less about.

Oddly enough, since the ABO made me wait three years before taking the Master exam after passing the regular ABO, I actually had my paper submitted and approved by committee a full year before I was even able to take the test itself.

I had written a paper before and had planned to use it, but it was flawwed. I think you nmay have read it, and helped me to find the flaw (paper on High Wrap Rx). Anyway I have learned so much since then that I am tempted to write another more refined paper and am thinkin of writing it on the matrix form of a prescription and it's uses. Ever since you have pointed the matrix form of an Rx even the most complicated formulas are simple and make sense. I had spent about 2 years memorizing formulas that I just took for fact, but now I can see how they make sense. I am hoping to write about the formulas that people know and then comparing them to the matrix form of the same formula and hopefully showing how they were derived. Or I will polish off the High Wrap Paper and go for the easy kill, I am undecided but eighther way I will send you a copy of both. By the way I have almost all the eyeglass related article from the journal Ophthalmic and Physiological Optics. I will send them your way. And if you need any articles let me know.

    Good luck Harry!

Random question out the review book:

"Diabetes mellitus is classified as _________ diabetes and is ______, _______."

First blank is either 'Type I' or 'Type II'
Second blank is either 'insulin dependant' or 'non-insulin dependant'
Third blank is either 'usually early age onset' or 'may be managed by diet'

It was one of the tougher review questions for me, because I don't remember being taught much of the medical side in either school or working in the field.

    Diabetes Mellitus Type II

Is usually seen in overweight patients and is non insulin dependant, this type usually comes on later in life and can be controlled by diet.

    Diabetes Mellitus Type I

Is usually in the younger ones and is isulin dependant

That ones is kind of a no brainer because my mother and mother in law both have Type II. Thanks William that was awesome and I will let you guy know how it goes.

I just got back from the test and I think I smoked it. I se what the old timers are saying about easy. I don't think t's the level of difficulty but the fact that you don't even need to work all the way through the problem before you realize what the answer is. On multiple choice questions you can almost guess on the questions that nee calculation if you understand the equaion. Thank you optiboarders you all help me to step up my game for the test.

You are now looking at an ABO-AC certified optician. I got home today to the letter in the mail. I thought it fitting since this is the place I came to for most of my knowledge that you all also be the first to check out the brand new designation (Ok my wife was first). Again I need to thank everyone here for pushing me towards knowledge, I can be stubborn sometimes and this board helps me to stay humble and for that I am gratefull.

    Great Job!

    Way to go Harry! Congratulations!

Harry and the others here who have demanded more of themselves have lit the fire under my heels. Thanks.

I have been following this and othe similiar threads and it has sparked me to renew my quest for the ABO Master. I had put it off for a few years when the Advanced Certification needed the prerequisite courses before you could take the exam(a few years ago). I am going to order the Advanced Review book and I think someone mentioned a Management for Opticians book? Any other suggestions?

My Library: System for Ophthalmic Dispensing(Brooks, Borish)
    Ophthalmic Dispensing(Stimson)
    Ophthalmic Mechanics and Dispensing(Epting, Morget)

and a few others that I have stuffed away.

    Fezz
