    Blue Jumper RGP lens problem

I have been wearing soft contact lens for the past 3yrs. But have changed to RGP lens about 5days ago due to the increase in astigmatism in my left eye. I am quite used to the feeling of wearing RGP lens now. However, I have some problems with it.

After about 4 to 5 hrs of wear, my vision will start to blur. As in I start to feel like there is a layer of haze or fog in front of the things I see. Why is it so? Is it due to dryness of the eye? Or because of mucus secretion from the eye? Normal blinking will not provide me with clear vision, I will need to blink longer or harder instead, or yawn and my vision will be clearer when there are fresh tears in my eye.

Also, after wearing for more 5 or 6hrs, I'll be able to be more aware of the lens in my eye. Meaning that the feeling of it moving in my eye is greater. I am afraid that it may scratch my cornea. Will it?

Will RGP lens actually change the shape of the cornea?

Does RGP lens cause dryness in the eye?

Please provide details about how you care for the lenses. When you remove the lenses, what is your cleaning regimen; how do you store them. In the morning, what do you do prior to inserting the lenses?

Fogginess probably due to edema (swelling). Fit probably needs improvment. Are you photophobic (light sensitive)? Is vision is spectacles blurry immeadiately after removal of contacts? If so see your ECP near the end of your wearing time for the day, problems are more appearent then.
In fact if you really want to get something done, consult your lens provider.

Yes the RGP can scratch your eye. So can soft lenses or dust or eye lashes.

Yes, the lens can change the shape of your eye. Ideally it will not, or possibly the "increase in astigmatism" was due to the soft lenses changing the shape of your eye. The RGP's often cause astigmatism to decrease so this may be a good thing.

I use Boston Cleaner to clean my lens, followed by rinsing it under clean tap water, and storing it in a contact lens case filled with Boston comfort formula conditioning solution.

In the morning, I rinse the lens with clean tap water. Place drops of Boston comfort formula conditoining solution on both sides of the lens before placing it in my eyes.

    to chip anderson.

    Nope, I am not photophobic.

My vision in my spectacles is not blurry after removal of the RGP lens.

Is it true that RGP lens are better for people with dry eyes?

The rigid lens soaks in the Boston conditioning formula overnight to make it more hydrophilic (keeps the lens wet and prevents fogging). In the morning you are rinsing all that conditioning off with tap water. Try putting the lenses directly on your eye and do not rinse with tap water in the morning. This should correct the problem you are describing. If after a few days you are still experiencing the problems you wrote about I would suggest seeing your eyecare professional again.

Thank you for your suggestion. I'll try that out.

I heard that rinsing the lens in water after soaking helps remove any residue from the Cleaner. Is it true?

When you remove the lenses and clean them, you then rinse the cleaner residue off with water. Make sure the lenses do not feel slick after cleaning and rinsing with water. If you rinse them well you should not have any residue.

Consumers are allowed to post on the Board, as long as the posts concern general eyecare related topics. However please be aware that any questions that involve diagnosing specific eyecare and eyewear problems are not appropriate for an online discussion forum. These kinds of questions should be discussed with a qualified eyecare professional who has examined you and is familiar with your situation. Posts asking for diagnostic help will be closed or removed.

Please see your eyecare professional for further advice and care. This is not the appropriate forum.

Before insertion, rub the lens for one full minite with Boston Condtioning solution or other wetting agent. Rinse by dipping in a glass of water once, to remove any foriegn matter you may have collected on the posterior surface (you are not doing this to remove the solution). DO NOT EVER RINSE THE LENSES UNDER THE TAP as sooner or later you will drop them, scratch them on the porcelien and then they will become oily and coated 15 min after insertion no matter what you do for cleaning and wetting (this could be why they are becoming foggy but I can't see this taking hours to occur).
Always wash your hands with a soap that does not contain anything oily (Ivory bar or Dial are probably best). Soaps like Dove, Camy, stuff with cocoa butter, lanolin, etc are to be avoided.
Apply lenses before any make up or hand lotion use.
