    Enamel chipping......

I have a customer who has a gold frame with a Demi Amber enamel finish on the front. This has begun to chip away. Ordinarily I would just replace the frame however its maker is (was) Moulan and no longer in business. My question is this, Has anyone had any experience in removing all of the enamel? If so, how is it done? I didn't want to fool with acetone until I was sure it would work, for fear of damaging the frame beyond repair. Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

    Metal frame

Wouldn't think the acetone would be a problem with metal.

I always remove it, very carefully with a single edge razor blade.

You can use paint stripper. I 've used it on several occasions.

    Harry,
Check with OKOart. If you remove the color, won't that also remove the clear coat on the frame? I know OKO can't replace a demi amber overlay, but they could refinish the frame. I've used them...they're good.

Harry, this sounds like a job for Hilco in Plainville. Like Chip, I've used a single-edge razor blade to remove the d/amber overlay, but there's always the possiblity of marring the metal finish. Let me know how this comes out.

Their website may be in business but they list Metzler as US distributors and Metzler has filed as well, I understand. (May be wrong but I believe I heard it) and Metzler only lists Revlon as a brand. go figure!

I've used the blade of an optical screwdriver to chip off the enamel. Its less sharp than the razor so less apt to scratch the metal surface. Charge for the service too. You have just increased the lifespan of that frame on his face. That has value. We charge $10. We just ask the patient if they they would like the enamel removed to make a nice even looking surface. Not necessary to explain that you'll just chip it off.
