We ain't never had it so good

Just going over some stats on the US economy. You know, we ain’t never had it this good. Everybody that wants a job, has one. Home ownership (the American Dream) is at it highest. Everything looks good. How sweet it is ! ! !

Now, if we can only stop our elected officials from wasting so much taxpayer money it will be heaven.

Yeah, but if the country cannot get its debt in control the bubble will burst and it will be an explosion.

Oh, we'll just nationalize everything and leave the creditors holding the bag.

The Soviet Union went broke and I don't really think they are paying off thier creditors. No foriegn government has gone in and said: "We own this place."

The Federal deficite will be reduced by curbing spending and reducing taxes.

well curbing spending yes. Reducing taxes???

A couple of weeks ago I was looking at Canada's debt. Now it was around $18,000 per person. With that the government had to spend around 20 percent of its budget to service that debt (interest payments). So with the American debt being around $27,000 per person then a larger percentage must be used, and thus more of every tax dollar is wasted.

It speaks for itself when you're comparing our economy to the Soviets'. I don't think it's quite that bad, but it's far from good.

Anyway, our creditors have nuclear weapons. Sort of makes a nasty letter from Mastercard seem a little less important.

I'm not sure about Karen, but yes I did get a big raise and my standard of living has gone up. My office is busier than ever and no one is afraid to spend money.:D
Yes the spending in Washington stinks, but what should be done. Increase our taxes? Well there's a good way for people to not have money to improve their lives. The pork spending is the worst. Can we add just a little more for anything any of our senators want.

Was reading an interesting article the other day re the line item veto Bush wants. Well putting aside for a minute the legality of this (don't pretend to understand the Constitutional issues involved, but the conventional wisdom is that this is the reason the other presidents who sought this never got far), the relatively unschooled (meaning me) would assume this could be a useful tool to keep spending down. Well apparently not: should the president get a line item veto, then Congress would lose the nanometer of control they have left in terms of funding every pet project--the thought being, let the president veto it and let him/her balance the budget. The president could also veto line items where he wants more money.

Just thought it was an interesting perspective.

As to the other, employment rate is strong (good); average wage is dropping (bad). The serious issue here is the debt not only of the country but of individuals, it's really spiraling out of control. (Wages go down, standard/cost of living holding steady? Do the math as they say). And of course a lot of what is fueling the economy is the transfer of equity from homes to cash--the problem here being obvious, this can be sustained only so long. This debt people are carrying will turn grim when the economy (inevitably) starts to cycle down. Look for some serious problems at the big consumer credit companies.
