When you retire, who's going to make your glasses?

Big Smile Judy, you are the best!!

I'm hoping one of these nice young Opticians will take pity on this poor old guy and do it at cost! Otherwise I'm going to have to dig that old Grande Mark out of the basement and see if I can remember how to work it. (And that won't be a pretty picture!);)

Hopefully a cute young optician that likes grandmothers. Otherwise I'll do it myself.

I am retired and I want to tell you that it is pretty scary out there. As I write this I am sitting on an Rx that I received a few months ago from an MD in the group practice that my PC quack belongs to (but that’s another story.)

I have an unremarkable Rx with a moderate amount of simple hyperopic astigmatism. I have been wearing CR39, FT 7X28’s for years. Couldn’t be happier. I wear a glass SV near Rx in a sort of P-3 shaped zyle frame for the computer. Couldn’t be happier. I wear an occupational FT-28 in CR-39 with just the distance portion tinted a dark grey for flying. Couldn’t be happier. Been wearing this stuff for years.

Here is what happens. I present with my new Rx, all of my old eyewear and ask that new frames and lenses be provided to fit as close as possible to what I have been successfully and happily wearing for many years.

The “optician” or associate then proceeds to tell me how everything I have is all wrong and how I should be wearing some new whiz bang type of progressive lens with new miracle coatings bla bla bla. I explain that I really don’t want progressives, don’t want hi-index, don’t want AR coatings, UV coating, scratch coatings.

I guess I will just have to wait till I get a chance to see my old buddy at his lab when I get out to Oregon in a few months. I direct you to a post that I made a few minutes ago:

    http://www.optiboard.com/forums/show...745#post136745

I suppose that one of these days I will stumble on an optician who knows his cookies and has been around long enough to have worked through all of the BS that so permeates opticianry today. His first goal will be to provide me with eyewear that meets my needs and not the needs of his ego or his pecuniary interests. I will then be a happy man.

I have my own accounts with various labs, they're easy enough to open. So, I'll probably just order the lenses and either go to a friends store or just have the lab do the complete job.

I don't need glasses, and never ever will thank you very much. I can just crank up the light and tilt things just the right way and I will be just fine.

Besides, now we have the amazing crystalens which is just like having a new set of eyes. That would surely be the route I would go.

    Can you detect the sarcasm?:)

I would go to Lenscrafters every month and get a new pair of glasses. Return the old ones every month!

Hopefully they dont change their 30 days no questions asked policy.
We have about 20 of them in our area!

I actually have just retired....... well, that's what they call it, I call it semi retirement and I only work an 8 hour day now sometimes 3, sometimes 4 days a week.

When I finally hang up my screwdriver and unplug the focimeter I'm hoping one of the many guys I have trained will sort out my ophthalmic problems.
Of course I'll insist on checking every step of the way.

Meanwhile at home I have the opportunity to start the massive clearout I have been talking about since we moved to this house 12 years ago..... there are still boxes unopened from the removal! I've found some real gems I'd forgotten existed

It sounded like a good idea...until I realized that you'll still be without the use of your $$ for most of the month (before you return them). Unless, of course, you use a credit card and use the "float".

    I like your thinking though!

    Clive

Retirement - You have to go cold turkey - half measures will avail you nothing. Look, throw away the office key. Get busy and polish off the “honeydo” list. Get a new set of golf clubs and a nice new fly rod. And, when not on the links or the stream develop your curmudgeonly skills. Start telling teenagers how it was really tough “back in your day” and body jewelry is always a good opening for a snide comment. Bump into a kid wearing cammies and say “Cripes, I didn’t see you.” Clive, there is a whole new world out there. You do not have to be nice to people anymore. You do not have to abide stupidity or ignorance. You can get as mad as hell and you do not have to take it any more.

You will also have lots of opportunity to make up for all those hours away from family and friends. Hug them till they holler. Spend time with the good old boys doing absolutely nothing but sitting in the sun telling lies. Enjoy your meals, have a drink in the middle of the day now and then. Sleep late and eat well.

Don’t worry about the petty stuff, like glasses.

    How sweet it is !

Hey People that seemed logical to me!

By the time I retire Lux will be the only manufacturer of designer eyewear!
So when the time comes I will enjoy a new designer pair of glasses every month.

PS I liked the idea of charging it on the credit card and getting refunds at the end of the cycle.
This means I will have a new pair even sooner.... Every 25 days!

I hope Chip will make it UV absorbant, and puts a Cryzal Alize coating over it to make it waterproof.
