    Bird Flu

Pet cats may have to be kept indoors once bird flu arrives in Britain, scientists have said after the death of a cat in Germany from the disease.

The case - the first of a mammal dying from bird flu in Europe - means that cats may be able to pass the H5N1 virus on to humans and that the disease may spread more easily than thought.

An estimated 675,000 Americans died during the flu pandemic of 1918. Are we going to suffer those types of losses again?

I would like to see comparable statistics for normal flu, malaria, AIDS etc.

    Indeed.

Are we officially allowed to stop worrying about SARS yet? I can't remember it being on the news that it was all overhyped tripe.

It is by universal misunderstanding that all agree. For if, by ill luck, people understood each other, they would never agree.

    This bird gets it.

My husband is on staff at a large metro hospital. They are taking this very seriously, already have an action plan put together. Of course this may just be erring on the side of caution, she said hopefully.

Great, plague. It's always something, ya know.......

As a nurse, I'm worried that it may start spreading to humans.

From what I understand, we are far more likely to be affected by West Nile, Spinal meningitus, lightning strikes, slipping on a bar of soap, or being shot by a jealous spouse. Thousands of other conditions present greater theats, this one is just the media "flavor of the month."

There has not been a reported case of bird flu, in a human, in london, or the rest of the UK. There has been the odd bird, in continental Europe, as close as France, but not in the UK

There was a case of a pet bird (from south america) that contracted the illness, but that died in quarantine, and wasnt therefore released into the general bird population
