    Titainium Coating

    I was wondering, what exactly is a titainium mirror coating? And when I get one on some lenses is that what I ask for, a titainium coating?

    A Titanium mirror coating is just a name. That is all.

    hmmm

    Well I wasn't sure if you guys know what I'm talking about. I had a pair of lenses that had a Mirrror finish to them, and when I say "Mirror" I mean it looked like a mirror as in reflected all colors like it was chromed or something...ANd a optician referred to it a titianium coating. I was just making sure that's what it's really called.

    Oakley has a mirror coat called Titanium. Pretty sure that was what he was referring to. Did you ever get the red ones? Are you happy with them?

    Titainium and mirror coating

    As said this person is probably talking about a name for a silver reflective mirror marketed by Oakley. It is possible to build such a silver dielectric mirror by oxidizing layers of silicon and titanium using vacuum evaporation.

    yes but

    yeah oakley does call their silver mirror titainium, but is it pretty much just a silver mirror with a fancy name?

    AWTECH, you know just about everything, so...

    I've always wondered why it's called a "di-electric" mirror?

    Then, I'd like to ask you if I'm correct assuming that a di-electric mirror does not reduce transmission very much.

    Is that not what Revo initially did?

    Is there any benefit, other than cosmetics?

    It's a silver mirror on an amber lens. The proper Oakley name for it is "Titanium Iridium".

    di electric mirrrors are basically mirrors made up of 2 (or more) transparent materials. The trick is to make the constructive and destructive interfeerence between the layers to cause a reflection (opisite to a MAR). Because of the properties of the layers and thier interaction, a very reflective surface can be made, and/or a specifically reflective layer can be made to only reflect an exact wavelength at a specified bandwidth

    Oh and to answer the question, di-electric materials are very poor conductors of electricity (typically less than on millionth of a Siemen). For mirrors they generally use Silicon oxides and silicon nitrides, and they are harder than the metal compounds generally used in regular coatings. There isnt much reduction in transmission, because the bandwidth of the reflection is ususlly very small, and often overlapping the visible spectrum edges

    Ed, I am late reading this thread

    Thanks for the complement, I try very hard to know what we are producing and always looking for ways to improve.

    QDO1, answered all of the question you asked of me. He did so exactly the same as I would have responded.

    An AR coating and a dielectric mirror are made with alternating layers of high index and low index materials to eitherincrease light transmission or reflect light in the case of a mirror.
