Question Has anyone ever heard of . . .

a new plastic lens polymer called "FR"?

One of our customers brought this to our attention, and I was able to track it back to a UK company called Norville!?!?!

At first I thought it might be similar to Indo's Superfin, but it appears not.

Is this an optical material only available in the UK?

    TIA

FR is refering to the grade of the plastic being used not the plastic itself. I may be polycarbonate that they are talking about. I think FR Refers to food grade and WR refers to window grade, however I am Not absolutely sure you can always google it for more info.

I think the "FR" could mean "For Rimless". I remember a post some months ago, where someone posting from the UK (I think) was talking about CR-39 FR or "CR-39 For Rimless." I have not gone to the trouble to "search" this out, but if someone else who knows doesn't bear me out on this, I may try to find that reference again.

FR is the Norville Optical internal name for 1.56 material with a UV 400 coating

That's right, FR is a new 1.56 material from Norville yet what is special about it is that it is also suitable for rimless unlike many other 1.56 plastics which are known to crack or star around the drillpoints and are generally a no go for rimless or supra frames. I have not had much experience in using it but after speaking to our Norville rep a few days ago im now starting to see a few dispenses for which it would be an ideal choice.
