eyeglass Rx from outside the country

What is the federal, state (LA) concerning the use of rx for eyeglasses from another country outside of the US? After two hurricanes hit our coast I have been seeing more and more of this and would like to know the legal policies concerning filling these rx's. thanks!C

Have filled Rx's from China, Japan, etc. No problem, nothing legal as far as I know. Who is going to complain. Had many that all I could figure out were the numbers, just hope the Chinese or whatever wasn't special instructions.

But hey, a refraction is a refraction, not heart medication.

Fill it, if it fits legal time requirements.

I've filled Rx's from all over the globe also. Should be fine.

Are you asking about the origin of the Rx script, or are you asking about lenses that have been surfaced outside of the US (because labs in the area were wiped out in the storm)???

As a former US practioner I can tell you that I had filled many Rx's from outside the US. The requirement is that the Rx is from a physician from the country that the Rx is from, specificying the Patient name and prescription.

If your question is about Rx lenses produced outside of the US: the foreign company has to be registered with the FDA for a manufacturer of ophthalmic presicription lenses and the lenses made have to conform to ANSI and FDA standards just as finished stock lens need to be. We have seen an increase of our Rx lens production for the US but I didn't attribute it to the hurricanes. I assumed it was due to the mergers/acquisitions taking place in the US and for unsatisfied practioners seeking alternative sources for product.

origin of the rx from a Dr outside of the US. Many of the people from other parts of Louisiana now live in my area. Lots of them do not speak English and come with written rx from another country. Thanks for the info!
