What is it called the , black light or black box used mostly for spotting up progressive and looking at A.R jobs?? And where can you buy it or how can you make it????

Buy a black UV light at Homedepot, connect it and stick it in a box connect the power, and you have one made yourself :bbg:

I wonder about these things, do they have/would they need some sort of filter to make them safe?

They actually emit UV, but if you filter they loose their purpose and will not show the items that start glowing. However you can wear UV absorbing glasses to protect yourself.

Years ago we used to use a hand held Burton or AO Black light to evaluate tear paterns, etc in fitting rigid lenses. In many ways it was a better tool than a slit-lamp at least for this purpose. However the greenies got all hopped up on the dangers of UV and the liberal college students of course were all told that any UV would cause them to get cancer and wither and die.
We had to stop using the black light in the office because giving every college student a 15 min explaination about how this was the "safe" end of UV and harmless was too time consuming to put up with.

Of course these same hippie/druggie students who questioned this were all lighting thier playpens with black~light and insense.

Result: It disappeared from our training, we became less adept and the patients were not as well served.

Fear not, it ain't gonna bite you. If you are neurotic about it, you can always use a UV filter on your glasses or have poly lenses.

PS: The Burton light has gone up from $75.00 to $500.00, wish I could find a used one.

Why can't you type your questios like other people ? ...........if you see that good you will not see lens swirls even with a black box...................

get a regular desk lamp and a pack of 60-Watt soft white bulbs. if you can't see watermarks or surface defects with that kind of light, maybe you better have your eyes checked.

beh... blacklights... leave them to the stoner college kids that have the psychedellic posters.

The lowest cost UV bulbs are blacklight bulbs found at Spencer Gifts. $5 They are small fluorescent type and have the ballast built into the base. Just insert one in any desk lamp socket. Much more compact and less expensive than the growlight type found in garden or pet stores.
