There are several versions of the Bayer (or "oscillating sand") test, though the one you're likely to see reference to most often in our industry is the COLTS Bayer Test, since COLTS is an independent testing facility that does product evaluations for a variety of companies. However, this isn't the only version of this test, and you are likely to see differing results -- even for the same product -- from different sources. For that matter, you can expect some degree of variance, even from those using the exact same test method.

Generally, the Bayer rato is the ratio of the gain in measured haze of an uncoated Hard Resin control lens to the gain in haze of a test lens, after a number of cycles in an oscillating pan covered in sand (or a synthetic abrasive). Consequently, this test is a measure of how much more resistant to abrasion a given lens is compared to uncoated Hard Resin. Uncoated Hard Resin will have a Bayer ratio of 1. Most uncoated High-Index and Polycarbonate plastics will have a Bayer ratio of less than 1. Hard-coated plastics will generally have a Bayer ratio of 2 to 4, depending upon the specific product and the specific Bayer test. "Ultra-tough" type hard coatings and AR coatings will generally have a Bayer ratio of around 5 to 7.

Actuyally the ones that use the right coating that adheres perfectly to the lens and lets the AR coating.............whatever it is..........adhere properly to it.

They all claim to be the best...............but all who have solved above problems are among the best.

AR coatings do still come off or partially off after a period of time, due to lots of different reasons, that is why AR strippers are a bread and butter item for the ones that supply them.

Assuming you're using a quality coating that doesn't suffer from adhesion issues, some other important performance attributes to consider include:
    • Low Luminous Reflectance
    • Good Scratch/Abrasion Resistance
    • Good Hydrophobic & Oleophobic Properties
    • Good Overall Cleanability
    • Good Long-Term Durability
    • Consistent Reflex Color
