    Topcon Edger vs. Santinelli

Anyone have any thoughts on these two brands of edgers?

Santinelli is the BMW to the Yugo that is Topcon.

Santinelli is just a proven, well-known name in optical equipment... Topcon, well... they make decent Surveying Equipment for Civil Engineers, but as far as optical lab equipment, they just don't have the name, reputation or the quality.

    I agree,
The Santinelli systems are very cool and you have to love that crystal clear edge polish function.

I've got a Briot, wish I'd bought the Santinelli.

Santinelli does a smaller B measurement, it's been an issue lately. My Briot also cuts a lens, THEN tells me it is too thin to groove.

I know your were looking at Topcon, but the above are some issues to look at.

Actually, you get what you pay for with any machine. If you have more money than you need, then go with Santinelli. If you're like me you make comprimises.

you are absoloutley right. When I choose a machine I rather go for a quick accurate one which has no frills and bells. I do All my own hand work, and would rather finish a job by hand than use a machine to do it. I really liked the old Profil range - they stayed in calibration for ages. and some of the Briots suit my way of working, but nowadays the Nidek range is on top of my list, they make such crisp jobs, time after time

sure I can, but my Kappa does it faster and it allows me to do the three or four other jobs that I've got going at the same time. I have a nylamatic groover that sits between my edgers, but I rarely use it save for some re-working of evil lens shapes... I don't have time to do my semi-rimless jobs by hand on most days, but I do try at least one or two a week just to keep up with with using it after finding how much I really rely on the Kappa.

I met a Topcon salesman a few years ago who had doubts about the quality of his machine. I wasn't in the market then and would look elsewhere. Topcon makes some excellent equipment which I've used for years. Apparently, this isn't one of them.

    QDO1,

You're absolutely right...I've never driven a Yugo. I've never owned a Topcon edger either, but I've seen the Yugos on the side of the road, and I've seen Topcon edgers on e-bay that don't get any bids. It was pure speculation that Topcons and Yugos had anything in common.
