More winter grade tents are needed after asia earthquake than are available in the world. Is it about time we stopped waging wars with eachother, and started helping each other?

Yes.
The time to make pease is after the surrender of the enemy. Never before no matter what his little problems are.
aid response has been very slow when this disaster is worst than tsumani according to UN & NATO.
Is it because it is a muslim country?:(

I don't think so. I think people are becoming less shocked by disaters as they seem to be on the increase.Originally Posted by Graduate
It probably doesn't help when we hear in the news that after the Tsunami the charities were unable to spend all the money they recieved fast enough, and were sitting on millions while people still suffered.

It's hard to get to and security because of Ben Laden followers is not good.
The country itself is not an enemy of the west, but yes we have enemies there.
And the origional question had to do with stopping waging war.
Chip had it not been for the support of pakistan, fighting terrorism would have been difficult,if not impossible.Originally Posted by chip anderson
I was thinking the same, did they not let us use their air bases.Originally Posted by Graduate
It is irrelevant if they are Muslim.. many people in th earthquake region will freeze to death in a month or so, men, women, children, elderly... they are humans, and so are we
If you want to know what the terrain is like out there - think Himilayas in the winter
they say so far 100 times more people died in this tragedy, that in the recent hurricane in the USA
perhaps if these poor people were in the west, had live TV feeds and a voice, the world would have responded

I tried to research if there were organizations collecting goods in kind (tents, blankets, etc) but most agencies say that they are collecting $$ to buy the proper type of winterized tents. Also, the cost and time to ship something over there slows the process down. It sounds like money is most needed.
Check out www.oxfam.org or www.mercycorps.org
I feel those are both really great charities with reputable records.

I contacted the group that I work with and was told that tents, blankets etc. can be had very cheaply in India and China. The problem is shipping costs to the area.
I'm going over there in the spring as soon as the Pakistani government allows more volunteers in. There is a freeze on any more independent volunteers entering the area because of safty concerns due to weather.
What they need is Helicopters, to enable the aid to be delivered, and to rescue those who are injured. Perhaps we could stop using helicopters for waging wars (even temporarily) and use them for saving lives. I applaud Jackie for wanting to do something positive.
Perhaps the UN needs to re-appraise its role
The UN is mandated to intervene and protect innocent victims from genocide and oppression. Their role has advanced in recent years from passive to active. However, the UN is not a charity.

Don't confuse the UN with the Red Cross. The charity work you're talking about is more suited to the Red Cross and more likely to be carried out by them.
The sort of helicopters they need are all being used in wars all over the world at the moment. they need big Chinook type helicopters, crews and support staff. The UK sent 3 last week, and we have something like 30-40 others, which are "unavailable"Originally Posted by Chairtime
