I would like your opinion on the new Topcon Automative Lensometer

I hate it. If you get even a speck of dust on the lens it wont work and the readings are off quite a bit. I read the same pair of glasses several times and got a different reading each time. I much prefer the old manual lensometers.

There is but one device worthy of measureing hte refractive power of spectacle lenses. Bauch & Lomb Model 70 or its later reincarnation by Reichart. The next ophthalmologists office that sends me a bad neutralization of a progressive with a Humphrey print out I will scream

Worse when you take a lens, see that it is 7 degrees off axis, send it back to the lab, and they send you a Humphrey print out saying it is one axis. It cost one lab a lot of business one year.

Am still having a B&L purchased 1964. We have cleaned it a few times...........changed some bulbs..............greased some joints.............changed an ink roller a few times and it is still as accurate as the first time used.

give me a manual Topcon with a rotary prism and fine dotted and lined target anyday - any of the LM series is great

I think every "Optician" should have a B&L model 70.

I keep looking for a decent used model. I currently use a Marco 101. It is ok, but no where near the focimeter that the B&L is.

Is the Riechert copy just as good?

speaking of the great Model 70 Vertometer... where can one get a set of prisms for the unit? The lab I am in has the Reichert version, but I have no prisms for those instances that arise where I cannot check something because of the high degree of prism in the lens (can't surface 'em either, have to farm out).

About how much do they cost? My old timer friend says they are pricey, but he's not sure where to get them anymore, since he still has his circa 1960's set from B&L.

I have seen them as high as $80.00 each. Off hand, I am sorry I don't know... it shouldn't be too hard to track down.

Funny though... about a week ago, an eBay seller and the complete set 3,6, and 9 starting at $10.00
