    high diopter lenses

I'm curious to see what the craziest prescription you guys have made. I just finished my first pain-in-the-buttocks lenses- minus 26 and 28 diopters single vision. We made them the first time on a -8 front base 1.60 index lens, but the patient rejected due to frame issues (poor edging job). The second time we did a -6 front base with 1.67 index lenses and edged them ourselves- turned out looking pretty spiffy for that high of a power.

We made a pair of glasses a few years ago for a patient that was about a -32.00. She wore contacts(which were custom and about a -28.00 or so) but wanted a pair to wear just in case. They were not pretty and she was unable to wear them.

She saw 20/40 with her contacts.

Optidonn: I'll bet cash money the +18 -20 isn't useing both eyes together, in spectacles and I'd be pretty sure he isn't using both of them in contactsss.

One used to select the eye with the best acuity and frost the fellow lens.

He is a twin born over a month early. His brother is a -20.00 in both eyes. All I know is that is what his Pedeatric Ophthamologist prescribes and that is what we get for him and when he is without them he gets very vocal about the fact that he can't see. The two of them are some of the cutest kids I have ever seen.

Have you concidered muscle surgery for this patient? Can't immagine accomplishing this in Spectacles that can actually be worn on the face.

Optidonn: If the + - twin hasn't had catarac surgery, I suspect the doctor crossed a minus sign by mistake.

one of my co-workers asked a interesting question- is it possible for a patient to wear contacts and eyeglasses to eliminate some of the power on the eyeglasses?

Can eliminate the power of the eyeglasses entirely. Now prism you have to do entirely in forward lenses, although you often won't need as much over CL.
